Rochester sporting good /gun shop is having a big goose contest. So Sunday afternoon I shoot this 747 goose.I get it home and weigh it.It weighs 12 lbs. 4oz. So Im pretty excited about entering it. I get to the gunshop and they say we have a 14 lb 2 oz and Two 14 lbs. I cant believe that someone isnt cheating a little bit. What do you guys think,How common are 14 lb geese? Ive been goose hunting for over 25 years and the biggest Ive ever seen was 13.

I don’t think they are that uncommon. The first Goose I ever shot weighed just over 14lbs. It was a huge bird.

November 21, 2006 at 1:26 pm #25484THERE ARE ALOT OF GEESE OVER 12 LB’S, YOU CAN GET A FLOCK OF GREATERS THAT CAN BE OVER 15LB’S, WITH IT BEING LATER IN THE SEASON THEY CAN REALLY PUT ON THE FEEDBAG AND GROW IN WEIGHT.

November 21, 2006 at 3:46 pm #25513You have to take into account the numbers of geese that are being shot around Rochester this time of year. I am surprised it is not in the 15’s yet.

November 21, 2006 at 4:17 pm #25520Matz. We went through the same B.S. with you on the weights last year. The weight is the weight. I use my fishing scale from X-Tools. The biggest one we weighed was 12.8 this year. Alot around the 11.5 to 12 lb range!

November 21, 2006 at 8:03 pm #25575Matz. I will put my money on this if you have enough. I too have a goose on my wall that goes 16.8. We usually shoot the bigger birds later in the year. We have had a few that have been in the 12-13lb range this year. I’m not trying to start anything here but between Gooskiller and I we have over 30 years guiding under our belts. So when we say that a bird 13-15lbs We are real close on what there weight is We will bring the scale out this weekend and take a few pics so you might believe us. Just my .02

November 27, 2006 at 12:51 pm #25901Sounds like the local guides should start there own biggest Goose contest.I firmly believe there are geese that weigh over 15 lbs,but I think they are somewhat rare and do not represent the average “Giant Canadian Goose”.So bring the scales out to the field and I bet will you find the vast majority will weigh in the 9-10.5 range.

November 27, 2006 at 1:28 pm #25905I don’t do a lot of goose hunting but I’d say, at least up here on 4, most late season days you will average 12 pounds a bird. Fourteen does not seem too huge to me. as a matter of fact, I’d be surprised if that holds out the rest of the season.

December 3, 2006 at 3:57 pm #26463Chappy whats your point. Like I said average is around 10 lbs. You are a weakling. And later in the season doesnt mean the geese become bigger.
