Well. We had a great time goose hunting down here at Rochester with the guys from IDA! We started out meeting Friday night for dinner and drinks at the Bears Den in Byron. Then Jason (aka Mallard-militia) and his wife Mandy were kind enough to have us over for and poker.

Saturday morning started off cool, cloudy and light wind. We had SNOW! About 8-10 inches in the field. After digging out the pits and setting decoys, we sat and waited. Saw a few ducks soon after getting ready but they did not want to work. We saw a few flocks early and work quite a few. The first real good flock came in and landed on the edge of the decoy spread while we were trying to work in another flock. The second flock pulled out and the flock that landed started getting up. We ended up shooting 7 out of that flock! We were able to shoot a lot of birds that morning in our field. We ended up with 21 birds for 14 guys. Not quite a limit, but good enough. Just ask Lars about shoot and release! (Not his fault)! Mine!

All in all we have a great day and then went to breakfast. Thanks for everyone that came and had a great time! Mallard-militia, Lars_msu, Chappy and son, Crosbytstick, Erick, Buckshot and Brat. Also joining us was Paul Kelb and his grandson.

    Until next time, Good Hunting!

I am sitting in my office right now, munching on the smoked geese from the weekend. MMMM. They are going down like potato chips. Wish I had some to wash it down.

The guy across the hall now has acquired the bag and won’t give it back. He is complaining that he can’t stop eating it. Even the ladies in the office are enjoying the feast.

Lars, Mark, and I sat around all saturday afternoon drinking beer and smoking stuff. It was pretty fun. I think the best marinade was the soy sauce, terriaki, and amble amounts of E&J brandy. The other favorite seems to be the garlic terriaki with onion and soy sauce.

Does anyone else have a good marinade concoction for smoking?

    MM,

Did you smoke the batch on Sunday longer? I really liked the dryer pieces, but the thicker chunks were almost too moist in the middle.

I’m pretty sure that smoking the geese is the only way to go.

another really good recipe is the small jerky recipe packets at gander mountain add 3 tbs. of white vinagar and 9 tbs. of water and i add some liquid smoke as well sometimes and put on dehydrater…had everyone at work believing it was deer venison

I’ve done two more batches with smaller peices. I fell asleep during one batch and smoked it for about 5 hours on medium. It actually turned out the best. The peices are just like jerky. The first batch that you got could have used an hour or so on medium to dry them out more. I was eating some of the first batch with pepperjack cheese and crackers. That was tastey.

I’ll have to send you some duck up to your house with the new smoke and sleep technique.

    Nice work.

Figuring out the best way to smoke something seems like a great hobby:

We tried but the lake was frozen as far as we could see. We went and had breakfast instead. I was able to get up to Ogilvie in the afternoon and four of us got our limit of roosters. They will make for some good jalepeno poppers next week in Wisconsin.
