Nothing beats hunting ducks and geese in the snow for me. It was a very wet and great day to be out. pool 8 was the place i was hunting, south of goose Island. Did’t get out until about 1 and had to leave a while before the end but I ahd 4 ducks and a goose. Oh, and missed a few shots in-between too. I do have to tell ya about the hunter that left as I was going to park the boat. He had just shot a hen mallard that hit the bank and then swam to the slough. He did’t have a dog, so I had mine get the duck for him. He said that was his limit and was going to leave. I then said maybe I will hunt where you were and he said fine. While he was motoring away I got to where he was sitting and my dog just goes nuts. You guessed it, he stuffed the hen in the grass. Now I know we can make mistakes, but I wish he would have just asked me if I could take it. I did count it as a hen shot and made sure I didn’t shoot at another hen. Anyway it was a fun time, my dog retrieved her first goose and made me happy. Lots of duck around to make hunting good for the remainder of the season, I hope. good luck hunting.–John

November 12, 2006 at 2:33 am #24697i myself, was out all day as well w/ dismal results. i hunted pool 7 with a freind from dark to dark. tons of birds in the sky, but all the birds were extremly decoy shy. pulled the mojos and vortex at 8 am, reduced spread size at 10 change positions at 12 tried a different area from 1 on. i heard minimal shooting from tremp 2 brice prarie all day. my friend and another decided to try goose with the same results the people that i did see shooting were taking marginal shots at best—sky busters i dont think it was a rash of new birds but birds that had been here since last week that were all pretty educated it was the worst hunt i have had in optimal conditions, time for me to migrate south

November 13, 2006 at 3:43 pm #24786We had the same results as you guys on Pool 7, though we did have a small window from 8:30 to ten when two pairs and one group came to the coys so we ended up with 6 birds. Never shot before 8:30, and never shot again after ten, we stayed until 2 pm. Those were some of the most call and decoy shy birds I have ever seen. Tried aggressive calling, quiet calling, no calling, drake call, pulling some dekes, etc, etc. and nothing seemed to work. Birds would flare at a shot 5 miles away.
