I like mornings early in the season, and on clear days, but afternoons really catch up late season and on crappy weather days.

Morning hunt or afternoon, which do you prefer?

I LOVE mornings! Deer seem to be most at ease in the mornings and going about their business naturally, as they have had all night to calm down after having been pressured by hunters during the day. I also like mornings because that is when I have historically shot most of my bucks!

November 3, 2006 at 3:02 pm #23937Seeing this is in the waterfowl forum, I assume your talking ducks/geese.
I have most of my success in the morning-mid day, but afternoons can be great when the flight is happening. I often see more birds a couple/few hours after sunrise on morning hunts this time of year.. migrants sitting down to rest.
Nothing like big flocks of big northern mallards coming into the decoys without circling time and time again.

November 3, 2006 at 3:16 pm #23942Although I haven’t waterfowl hunted in several years I always thought mornings were best for sitting in the blind especially early in the season. I seemed to have better luck in the afternoons jumping potholes and ponds. I also liked later season afternoons for finding big flocks of northern mallards feeding in picked corn fields. That reminds me. I’ve got a buddy that does quite a bit of late season duck hunting and he always gets those huge northern mallards this time of the year. You know, the ones that actually taste good. I don’t like the taste of the local mallards which are small in comparison and have that rivery taste.

November 3, 2006 at 4:25 pm #23956Overall I prefer morning hunts to afternoon hunts. But I too enjoy a good cloudy afternoon and the early flight it usually brings.

November 3, 2006 at 5:43 pm #23968I prefer AM hunts most of the season.
The exception comes this time of year. When the mallards are in town I like great them when they return from the fields.

November 3, 2006 at 7:07 pm #23977Why the heck would I get up and go at 4:00am when I can sleep until noon and have the same results?!
From here on out, it’s all afternoons baby….don’t count out those bright blue bird days either……it makes it easier to ID greenheads!!! Yeah

November 3, 2006 at 11:57 pm #24005I liked the mornings the best, but not because I shot more ducks. It was watching the sun come up over the river that got me out of bed at 2 a.m. to go out and hopefully get a spot to hunt, then go back to sleep in the grass and wait for the morning to arrive
