I was out on my 2nd favorite spot close to home looking to wack and stack some local fowl this morning. I had a new comer to the sport of duck hunting. So I figured that I would let him take the good shots just praying that he would get a decent shot and maybe even knoch down a few birds. Well for a “cop” he sure shot like crap I was rubbin it pretty hard and picking up his slack. We had a decent day for hunting around home shooting a couple greenheads and he blasted a coot.

It was not till we were picking up decoys when I saw something I have never seen in my life. We were hunting a lake that has about 10 acre island on the very north end
(hint hint) in Anoka county. I was watching the coot migration swiming across the lake when suddenly the million coots parted like the red sea and I wonder why?

I will never forget why first a doe jumped in the water, then another , and another 5 does together then the big daddy jumped in. They all swam across the whole lake to get off the island. They can really move in that water.
I did not get a real good look at his rack but it was sure shining in the sun.

Man that was something to see

    Pretty neat isn’t it!

A few years back we were making our way into the BWCA. We were making our way across Gabbro lake when we could see something WAY ahead, thought it was a moose swimming across the lake. As we got closer we could see whatever it was wasn’t making it far. When we got close enough we could make out a MONSTER buck, it was swimming in tight circles and had been since we first spotted it 5 minutes earlier and who knows how much longer it had been doing it?? It was a main frame 12pt, with little kickers all over, ABSOLUTE MONSTER!! We made a half circle around it and “pushed” it towards an island. When it hit shore it was totally out of energy and slowly made it’s way(stumbling) into the pines. I think that deer would have drowned that day if we hadn’t pushed it to shore as it was barely keeping it’s head above water when we got to it. Something was definitly wrong with it, thin, confused. Very cool experience though, something I will never forget!!
