Holy Smokes! I trolled through a narrow cut in a 1/4 mile long emerged lilly pad field (during a recent bass tournament) and literally saw 100+ wood ducks jumping straight up and flying away when my boat got about 30 feet from them. It was the craziest thing I have ever seen. They weren’t all at once either. It was like every 40 yards another 4-8 wood ducks would jump up then fly away. Also, between the packs of wood ducks were flocks of 100+ coots (I think that is what they are called). It was freakin hilarious because since the lilly pads were so thick and tall they couldn’t get airborne so they’d just fly a few feet then crash into the pads . BTW- The pads this time of year are emerged 3-4 feet so you can’t see any of these ducks until you are right on them.
I’ve never really duck hunted but I sure was wishing I had a gun.
