WI Split 7 Day Southern Duck Season

Just wondering how many people are happy with the new 7 day split season for the southern zone in Wi. In the past we have had a 5 day split season. Opening weekend, M-F plus the second weekend, then the season would close for 5 days and re-open for the remainder of the season. This year I feel they pulled a fast one on us. Opening weekend and M-F then it closes for the next 7 days. We lose the 2nd weekend, they added two days on at the end of the season DEC 4 and 5. I for one am not in favor of the 7 day. Our season in the past has still ran into Dec. and most of the time the birds are gone by then or everything is frozen. If you prefer the 5 day split season give Kim Benton at 608-261-6458 and let her know you’d like to see it changed back. Most of us have to work and trading two days at the beginning of the season on the weekend for 2 days at the end during the week isn’t a fair trade.

Let me know your thoughts Whatsa

I’m going to try and add a Poll I hope I do it correctly.

I would love a split season in MN. 5 7 doesn’t matter to me at this point. There are too many years we miss the flight.

I hadn’t even noticed that they went to seven days. I don’t like it one bit. Five days is perfect.

That’s another thing I’m afraid of. I don’t think a lot of people have noticed. I have a buddy coming from PA been planing it all summer and we just realized yesterday that the season is closed the day after he gets here.

Now we are trying to figure out were in the northern zone we can go??

7 Day…it has been years (at least 5) since I have not found a hole to shoot ducks in on the last day of the season. The ducks never leave..but the fair weather hunters do! And that’s the main reason I like it on the end. I’d rather shoot a limit of mallards and a diver or two, than a teal and a woodduck any day of the week! Just my 2.

I agree I can find duck on Monday and Tuesday Dec 4th & 5th also if I want to take 2 days of vacation. I’m not a fair weather guy. I’d rather shoot them the 2nd weekend of the season and the last weekend which would be Dec 2 & 3rd
What benefit are those two days during the week when the weekend are wide open with everyone else deer hunting. If I don’t need to fight to get a spot at that time of year why would you want to burn two days of vacation if you didn’t need too??

    Another 2 cents

Like my grandma used to say..”earn’em to burn’em”. I wasn’t calling anyone out as a fair weather hunter, just calling it as I see it. My opionion differs from yours, it happens!

I guess we all just need to learn to deal with what the regulations say. Is it right? No…..Is it wrong? No….

For me the 2 days of vacation is where it is at. Taking 2 days of vaction is what seperates the “hunters” from the “hunties”.

I’ll trade two days of skeeter swatting woodie hunting for the possibility of two exceptional days of late mallard hunting.

Besides, the bassin is still awesome in October, and sucks in Dec.

I wish the 2nd opener was on a weekday like it used to be. The last two years, the 2nd opener has been WAY more crowded for us than the first opener.

I think I’ll call Kim and say good job.

I like to burn’um in Iowa Pheasant hunting in Late Dec and Jan. rather than at home duck hunting?? My intentions were not to start a argument. I just don’t see an advantage to those two days in Dec. That’s why I entered a poll to see what most people felt?? Thanks for your thoughts

So Wisconsin should set seasons according to people’s schedules? I personally would like to see the second opener on a Wednesday like it “used” to be. Enough pressure the way it is without having two openers on weekends. But I’m not complaining about that.

Don’t mean to ruffle any feathers, but others are right, it’s a choice you have to make with your vacation time. I personally do a lot of different hunting and fishing, but my vacation is burned up for the ducks. That’s the choice I make.

I’d rather see 2 splits 5 or 6 day each than 1 single 7 if your looking to hunt the late season. In my opinion that would be better than extending a season 2 days. Vacation aside where is the benefit in these 2 days if your looking to hunt later?

I would Love 2 different splits. Get us more on the back end.

No, the 2 days isn’t much, but it’s on the end of the season which usually means less of a lot of things like: Bugs, heat, hunters, weeds (finding ducks and getting around) even with a good dog when those arrowheads are thick in the early season a wounded duck is hard to get, etc….

There is just something about busting/dodging ice that makes it feel more like “duck” hunting.
