I know this is a little late but I have been busy and experiencing technical difficulties. Attached is a picture of my son Ryan (on the left) and his friend Matt Thompson with their first goose! Matt’s dad was nice enough to ask us to go out which is a huge deal for me as I have never been on a hunt before….for ANYTHING! I don’t have any decoy’s or a canoe or much else. Just the 20 gauge that my son bought from one of the members who posted a classified add here last spring. I think it was Waterfowler99 over in Onalaska. Anyway, I fish but have never had much of an interest in hunting. My son is the one who is crazy about it and I have supported him. We are both learning.
Both Matt and Ryan took their gun safety training last spring over in Faribault. I participated in the class too and I can’t say enough about the job those guys do over there! What an excellent program they have put together over the years.
Back to the hunt…..we had our canoe’s pushed up in the cat tails. We had some shots at some fast moving ducks and some geese but no quick success. Then as we are sitting there we could hear a group of geese coming from our right but we couldn’t see them due to the high cat tails. All of the sudden they were right in front of us and all spread out. The boys started unloading their guns. Matt hit one in the wing and down it went. Ryan reloaded and finished it off with a quick shot. That was the only one we took for the day so you couldn’t ask for anything more as they shared in it 50/50! Both boys can’t stop talking about what a great time they had and for me it was a blast too.
As a side note, they had a 7th grade football game yesterday. As they were standing out on the field a group of Canadian’s flew over head….sure enough, when I asked Ryan about it after the game he said they both watched them and wished they had a gun in their hands!
