How many dekes are you guys thinking out putting out early part of the season? I think the birds catch on pretty quick to 2-3 dozen mallards and a mojo or two. I was thinking about going large early season. I have 13 dozen mallard dekes and I think I am not going to be afraid to use them. Last season I generally used around 4 dozen at any one time with 2 or 3 spinners and a bag of rocks.

Early season, they are still in smaller groups. Has anyone tried large numbers of dekes early part of the season?

Double M, We usually waited until MEA weekend before putting out a large set of BOLOCKS. How many Bolocks did you have to set out to get your suzy you are taking as your bride saturday?

Unless something has changed(MN), you cant use motorized spinning wing decoys in the beginning of the season. You can use shakers and prop propelled(no moving parts above the water).

I have used as many a 120 decoys in the early season, and as few as 4. The larger spread does bring in a few more birds, but not enough to make me want to pick up decoys all afternoon until I have to in the late season.

I think I am going to try something new this year.. put 2 swimming decoys out and a shaker for the 1st couple weeks… and leave the duck call in the truck.

Now if we can figure out how to have all the want-to-be champion duck callers understand that 35 different people hail calling at the same time does not attract ducks.

I agree with all of the above posts. I have made an effort the past couple years to down size and get off the beaten path for the opener. (And first couple weeks.) This year I will set no more than 12 dekes. Most will probably be teal with a few Mallards mixed in.

I will also be leaving the call in the truck! I don’t think there will be a lack of call going opening morning.

And as I’ve said in other posts I will no longer hunt over my ROBO ducks. (For the Most part.) We had better luck in High pressure areas without them last year. I feel the birds a becoming conditioned to some degree. Just my .10.

You might want to check on that Dave…….Pretty sure the law states No MOTORIZED decoys (no mention of spinning wings)……I would assume that includes swimmers and shakers.

personally, I love to hunt those early season woodies in the trees with 5-6 dekes…….picking out the purdy colored drakes is fun and challenging when they come zipping in and out of the trees.
