Two weeks ago, I recieved a wedding invitation for a close friend of my fiances’ in the mail. I could feel the onset of a migrane headache as she read the date of the wedding as “September 30.” First of all, who in there right mind does this!!! For two weeks now, I have been trying to get out of going, but since I will be newly married in 2 1/2 weeks myself (still goose hunting that morning – thanks top gun guide service), I do not want to jeopradize the rest of my life.

I am hoping that I can reach out to my fellow IDA’ers in the Melrose / Payneville area in hopes of buddying up for a duck opener. I could supply all of the necessary equipment if need be. I am utterly unfamiliar with this area and am very worried. I have been anticipated duck opener since the ice froze me out last year. Help??

Does she realize that she is getting married to a hunter? Hello !!!! These types of things are going to happen every fall. I think u should just go hunt and it might take a few days but she will get over it. Why would someone get married on a national holiday like duck opener anyways ?? Lets see sit go to a wedding for some guy u probably never met or go shoot a few of them local ducks u been preparing for the last few weeks?? not that hard of a choice

I had a verbal prenump with my wife and our friends and family understand that planning any event on an opener (fish, duck or deer) means it will happen without us (me, my brother & dad)!
Their have been very, very few exceptions over the years, and I have yet to get my chewed.
You know what you can get by with and what the right choice is. Just don’t take us down with you
    cheers

    Mallard,

You need to have this conversation with your wife to be. If not there will be somithing every other year. (This happened with my first wife.) NOT A GOOD DEAL.

If she knows you she will understand that this is not just another day of the year.

    Good luck.

Thanks for the moral support guys. When I got engaged I made one stipulation.
    1. I would get married on an opener, but I would never be there for an anniversary, and all of the guys that it effects will not be asked to attend. Including family and parents.

O.K. here is the kicker that really p’ed me off. We recieved the our RSVP back from her friend. The new fiance that will be married on the most sacred of days will not be attending my wedding because he has other commitments. It saves me $25 on food, but still yanks my chain. I don’t have any commitments on September 30, I HAVE PRIORITIES.

I just keep getting more upset the more I think about it. I think I am going to go puke.

My wedding is on bow opener this year, but I called everyone that bowhunts that were invited to the wedding and explained that I understand that hunting takes precedence over my wedding. (my two brothers and best man not included (sorry Grump). I even talked to some of their wives and explained that I would be dissappointed if they showed up at the wedding if they were missing an opportunity. Luckily, all the guys that I talked to do not get very serious until after the first frost. Thank goodness they understand.

Hunt from 9 until noon and drive your [censored] off to get to the reception. Marriage is all about compromise and negotiation.

    MM,

I feel your pain. I have friend at work getting married and starting to notice the guilty stares. See is getting married to one heck of a nice guy (he understands why I might not even be able to show up to the reception due to a tournament). However his fiancee cannot justify my absence, just to go fishing.
Stay strong and continue with your hunting/fishing obligations. Support groups like this are everywhere. Just like I tell my number one sponsor. Honey, I will only be able to do these types of events while I am young and agile. You, my dear, have the rest of my life afterwards to catch up.

    rickyfishes,

It would tear me up inside if you showed up by dinner. If I am not mistaken, your RSVP has three meals down???

I have to admit, you’ve got a great life, I mean wife.

Instead of losing points by not going or being grumpy all day during the ceremony and reception, see the opportunity that this is providing you. While openers are fun cause the ducks are dumb and its a big party, with global warming they can also be too hot and not that great. I’d say go to the wedding but on the same day you agree to go, bring up the fact that you’d really like to hunt Arkansas this winter or Canada in October or wherever it is you’ve always wanted to go. Take it from a guy who’s been married ten years..it is way better to score points than hold your ground. The old addage, the more you give, the more you receive is very true….and yes we’re still talking about hunting here!!
