I was thinking the same thing yesterday. Many of the small ponds were skimmed over around Montrose/Buffalo.

This should be a good year for BIG duck though. I personally like it when things freeze up around deer opener. We’ve got some great water for that situation.

    erick,
If your still talking about that Scandia/Taylors Falls area, you should be in good shape.
The point that we were making, was that some of the birds were likely to ride the wind until they found open water. That area over in Chisago and Washington counties has lots of open water
    cheers

I am still heading north to Menagha area for atleast Saturday morning. I guess we’ll see how it works. If all else fails, I’ll have a few more treestands put up on the land.

I would think with this weather howling like it has for the last 3 days that someone is going to experience opening day all over again, but with quality ducks. Hope you all hunt safe and wear your pfd’s! The water has to be alot colder now than last weekend.

Jake, Don’t forget the toilet paper!! Nothing is more fun than to do a number 2 with it 30 degrees and the wind blowing. Very refreshing to the lower extremeties!!

    Gundy,
I see that you are from the Austin area.
What areas do you normally hunt?

    Hey drake!
Got my two roosters yesterday at happy acres. But those ponds are holding drastically lower numbers of ducks. Saw a few woodies and mallards and a couple dozen geese.

    Drakes Demise,

As far as around Austin there is not to many places to hunt waterfowl. Mostly the Cedar River. When I was younger and in a lot better health I hunted many different places mostly west of Austin. Places like Oak Glen Lake north of Blooming Paririe, Geneva Lake, Bear lake, Twin lakes, Minnesota lake, Walnut lakes WMA near Blue Earth, mostly as a kid with my dad. He also took me to the great Swan Lake but it was so far from Austin that we only went there a couple of times. After my dad and grandpa passed then I hunted Buffalo lake near Jansville as some friends had a duck camp on the lake. Then I took a few years off to bowhunt but I didn’t care for that much as I was a waterfowler thanks to my dad. Then I hunted some lakes west of Faribault as we have a cabin on French lake. One of my favorite lakes was a little jewel called Sprigs lake just west of Morristown. I have hunted some on the Mississippi on the Weaver bottoms and Wildcat landing. I wish I was in better health as I would start duck hunting in earnest again as I really miss it. My Grandpa got in on the tail end of market hunting on Albert Lea lake and the stories he told of that really kept my imagination running. Between Grandpa and dad they really rooted duck hunting deep into me. Guns, decoys, boats were a big part of my early life. I hope I didn’t bore you with this.

If I got going again I would concentrate on the Lakes west of Faribault as there is a ton of water there and lots of place to explore. I forgot, I hunted Low in 4 mile bay with a friend of mine in the early 90’s. Fabulous bluebill hunting a couple of years. Then something changed and the flights quit coming into the bay.

Anyone have a duck report from the wabasha area. Buddy of mine has a cabin over there and wants me to come over and hunt. Was wondering if it would be worth going over. Thanks

the river is looking good right now especially yesterday there are numbers of multiple species of ducks around especially if you tuck back in hard to reach places they are there….you gotta work for them but there are plenty to be had
