    What a Bummer!

Got up on Sat with all the best intentions and the DREAM of locked up geese. Unfortunatley they decided to change feilds and move there flite plan. We saw 150 to 200 birds a day! All of which decided to move 1 mile south. Talk about Depression!

Thats OK we had a great time. We even found a way to get my uncles 2500 HD stuck and run it against a couple trees. (Not on purpose.) Good thing he owns a Body shop.

Here’s to having a better Duck Opener. (It couldn’t be worse.)

Are most people watching the birds to decide where they will hunt opener, or do most of you have long standing traditions?
I will be up in the Pine River, MN area, hunting with family and friends, in the same place I have been going for 28 years. Ducks or no ducks
    cheers

We’ve got a long standing tradition……a spot we know we can go to get away from all the idiots and shoot our woodies (and maybe a teal or two).

but I’m all for breaking tradition if the right opportunity presents it’s self ……so yes, I’ve got my eye on a couple places…….it would be a nice change to actually go out and shoot a MALLARD on opening day

Been finding quite a bit of rice this year…..and the ducks are making themselves more visable lately.

    24 Days!!!

I’ve done some scouting up north.
The wild rice is the finest crop that I have seen in some areas, for the past 15-20 years
This last month before opener always seems to play us a few trump cards though
    cheers

New tradition the past couple years.

We will be in the Batle lake/Ottertail area. Many from my group will head to Christina but I will head elswhere in the area. I am officialy sick of the sky busting that occurs on Christina.

This year I have my eye on a couple new sloughs and small rivers. Heading up the weekend before to scout.

I was up on Mille Lacs fishing this weekend.
Wow, did it feel like duckin’ weather on Saturday night into Sunday morning. Fog, frost and a breeze
I’m about done thinking about fish until freeze-up
    cheers

    By the by…..
Traveling back down I35 yesterday afternoon in a duckin’ beatiful light mist, from 2:00 to 4:00 pm.
I had problems spoting any birds at all
About a dozen honkers and about 20 misc. ducks scattered about.
    Made for a boring drive
    cheers

I went out Sunday mornig for some more geese. I am happy to report a lot of birds in the air, but were tough to get them to commit. Chose the wrong field I think. I have to give credit to the great weather this weekend. Got two more birds in the freezer for the anticipated new smoker coming.

    Bag limit question.

I live in the South east zone where the bag limit is 2 birds and the possesion limit is 4. I usually hunt in the central zone with bag limit of 5 and a possesion limit of 10, but have hunted the southeastern zone. If I hunt both zones and follow the zone laws as far as bag limits, how many birds can I legally have in the freezer? I have assumed that I can only have 4 since I live in the Southeast zone. I would like to stock pile 10 birds for the smoker, but am having legality issues. I feel that I have been BBQ’ing geese prematurly to stay within the possesion limits. Any thoughts?

    MM,
Visit the following web-site and call your CO. I think you should probably call Mitch Boyum, he is a good guy that will be happy to answer your question.
    http://files.dnr.state.mn.us/enforcement/phonedirectory.pdf
You are doing the responsible thing by asking first, he will appreciate that.
Please post back with the answer that you get, for the benefit of the rest of us.
    cheers

I will give them a call this afternoon. I tried stopping by the DNR office on Saturday, but no one was around. Sometimes I get frustrated with the regulation books, because they always seems to have room for interpretation and I don’t want to be on the wrong side of the law. I will let you guys know. Thanks for the info.

Bumping this back to the top.

Spent some time at the land last night. We had anticipated a much later crop pull due to the wet weather as of late. FORTUNATELY the crops are coming out this week!!!!!!

Annandale area duck populations seem to be good. We are seeing alot of teal and a very respectable number of Mallards in the area. Should be a good opener for those hunting the area.

We are also noticing a great rice crop this year. (Probably due to the Dry summer.) This should make for a good late season flite. I am hoping this will keep som birds in the area longer as they pass by.

Good luck to all hunting geese this weekend.

PS Why don’t we have Migration reprts for other states? I would think some of the Iowa, NE and Nodak guys would want to get in on this. I know I would love to hear whats going on in these areas.

I agree that some input from the surrounding states would be very welcome. I will be curious to see how strong the Dakota migration is this year?
Chriss, you and I have noticed the same thing regarding the wild rice, it is fantastic!
I am very optomistic going into the season, as usual
I did travel western Wisconsin last week and saw good numbers of teal in particular, but also woodies and mallards.
I have started seeing several geese moving recently. The most impressive flock was spotted last Tuesday while heading up Hwy 10 to St. Cloud. Ironically, they all landed in the prison
    cheers
