    Hey folks,

I do not know about you guys, but I have not been too pleased with the quality of the migration reports available on-line.

We are down to the best (last) 3 weeks of the season.

Lets try to ride out this season with some open discussion about significant migration evidence.

I am not asking anyone to divulge their secrets, just discus where the south-bound line appears.

    Here we go:

French Lake, Hennepipn County; Minor numbers of both divers and mallards, flocks upto 20 ct.

Clearwater Lake, Wright County; Approximately 2.3 million coot, no flock counts.

Gull Lake, Crow Wing County; 75-150 Northern mallards comfortably residing at the Hwy.371/Co.Rd.115 boat landing, hunted grassy point on Sunday, 5 Buffleheads, too much fog for flock count.

Lake Bemidji, Beltrami County; Great numbers of Ringnecks, Bills, Goldies, Buffleheads, Mallards and mergansers, unfortunately this is the refuge, no flocks on neighboring waters.

Leech Lake, I have not scouted and can not get a report from anyone?

I will provide more when I have it. Please do not forget to ask the fishing population what they are seeing. Most all fishermen are hitting big water right now!

    ——————————————————————————–

That preceeding quote was the start of our 2005 forum that exceeded 125 replies (not to mention the hits) with only 3 weeks left in the season!

I have made mention to several people that that forum did add significant enjoyment to my late season, and likely some additional success as well.

With early goose upon us and some folks already commenting on local populations, I think it is time again

Good luck this season to all of you

No secrets need to be exposed in this forum, refer to the quote from last year to see the explanation that seemed acceptable to everyone.

    cheers

I put about 200 miles on yesterday between 5-9PM checking holes and fields. I couldn’t find the Silver Lake flock, but did find a couple fields with 1-2 hundred birds. Locked in a couple sweetcorn fields that will be harvested in about a week. I found a lot of picked sweetcorn fields, but most of them didn’t have any activity. Atleast when I went by. Saw no birds in flight to chase yesterday. Heading out pre-dawn tomorrow to kill a couple dove, but primarily to watch to see when the geese start moving. Getting closer.

One field that had been planted with oats, but the tile lines must have broke. Field looked like , but there were small spots of flooded holes with lots of geese. There were more geese in this field today over my lunch hour. The land owner is not a hunter and doesn’t allow hunting so I will be on the fence line hunting in a week when the neighboring landowners sweetcorn is harvested.

The sweetcorn fields have been surprising dead from what I have seen. A couple fields have been getting geese in the evening, but not consistently.

The other spot that had geese yesterday was in a cow pasture that nestled up next to a swamp. I will be knocking on the farmers door tonight with a bottle of brandy and a smile.

I did not see many geese on the water yesterday.

    Here I am!

Set up the field this week. The report from last week still holds true. Birds holding near any cut grain field you find. But sadly the recent rains are going to push back the corn harvest in our area.

Birds have been moving at sunrise and sunset. I’m hoping with the rain predicted this weekend there will be more movment during the day. If not there will be action in the fields early and water by mid morning.

Good luck to all! Cabelas tonight. (Need some stuff.)

    Finally,
I spotted a honker flock, about 40 birds, in a traditional hay field NW of the metro. Call it the Cabela’s area
I am accustomed to seeing birds here every year. I do not understand why they just showed up though. This field has been bailed for weeks.

Did some more scouting on the way home from Cabelas.

Drake! I know your secret! Do we know the owner?

There are some sweet corn fields that have been pulled on the NE corner of Pelican Lake and birds holding on the water. Looked to be 50 or more.

On a side note. Pelican looks to have a very strong Mallard and Teal population this year. Spent a few minutes as I drove around glassing the water. Can’t give you a count but it sure looked good compared to last year.

Go get um this weekend boys! Can’t wait.

Well, I got turned down on the pasture that nestled up next to the swamp last night. About 50 birds were out there. An older lady owns the farm and she used to let people hunt, but now she leases it out for cattle grazing and doesn’t want to loose their renter.

Just got in from dove hunting. I have to admit it was the first time I tried it. It was really nice to watch the sunrise with my shotgun in my hands. Got four dove only. Hunted Northwest of Mantorville. I did not see any geese or fowl flying around. It was kind of a disappointment.

Not sure of the plans for the weekend. I have to meet with the priest for my wedding tomorrow morning. Won’t get out till the afternoon. Plan on hitting the water Saturday afternoon and different pasture on Sunday. Let’s hope we can all bust’em.

I’m a little worried about even getting my big rig into Pelican this year
Last year was no problem, but with the low water I may be SOL

You’ll be able to get it in. But there will be a few new STUMPS to be found.

I will probably be out there alittle closer to the season. A good friend leases the farm on the right as you come out of the chanel. If I’m going to be invited I want to go help with the set up.
