I have been practicing on my way to work lately and have decided to invest in some new calls. I was wondering what you guys out there like. Is it the instrument or the musician??

I tested them out at the game fair in ramsey. it would say that if you have a game fair or something like that, go and check it out. you would be surprised at all of the call makers that are there. I personally only spend about $25 to $40 for my calls. my boys usually will take care of a call that is needed to be put out of it missery. they love to blow on the calls.
just my opinion.

July 27, 2006 at 2:00 am #18927It depends on how you want to sound in the feild, and personally which call you can make sound good in the feild. I have 2 foiles calls and 2 of the high end H.S. calls and i choose FOILES Hands down. Now to some people spending 150 dollars on a call is outrageous but in the duck and goose call cattegory you pay for what you get. Now that is just my 2 cents.

July 27, 2006 at 2:18 am #18925Has anyone ever tried some of the custom guys out there like Tuko calls or duckbait? I think they are guys that make calls in their basements and I have heard good things. I just bought a double reed Tucko call for $25. I thought it would be worth trying. Some of the duckbait calls really look sweet and he uses echo inserts. I was thinking about a Duckbait single reed, but I am on the fence whether or not I should go name brand. I kind of like to nastagia of having a custom made call by the “little guy”.

July 27, 2006 at 2:57 am #18929Big D,
I’ll have to roll down the window from now on and bellow out some come-backs. That’ll wake you up.
I sure have been getting some strange looks. This morning I rolled into the Kwik Trip and forgot to put down the call. Some people just don’t understand.

July 27, 2006 at 3:41 am #18930It’s still the old single reed Mallardtone for me, simple and plain, but easy to use, it gets the job done for me. Now if someone could get the birds convinced to leave the Dakotas and fly down the river again, I’d be a happy camper!

Easy to use and I like the nostalgia of the old calls.By the way I am looking to buy Alma Duck Calls, check your basements and garages it could be worth your time.

July 27, 2006 at 2:53 pm #18937I put other.
There used to be a guy in Minnetonka that made goose and duck calls.
Paul’s calls was the name of the calls. Paul Englend is his name if I remember right.
Great call. More like the Arkansas type call. Very clear, rich tone and it carries a long ways when you really hammer on it.

July 27, 2006 at 4:32 pm #18941H&S and RNt are my primary calls. I look for calls with a smaller chamber. (I’m a small guy) I don’t seem to have the lung capacity to run a large chmbered call well. (Or maybe I’m an idiot and thats what I tell myself.)

July 27, 2006 at 5:55 pm #18944And where is the vote for the ‘ol Big River????? The sweeeeeeetest honk on the market.lol There’s nothing quite like 4 short reeds and that sweet honk of the big river on late-late season honkers. Another very big difference in the way calls sound is the guts. A huntin buddy of mine and I both have a Strait Meat, but he has acrylic guts and I got Jeff’s factory guts. His call is louder and a lot more crisp, but mine has a lot more of that whole “goosey” sound, soft and steady.
For ducks I got a very simple single reed H.S. that is about 7 years old and have never tuned or fixed the reed, and the only reason I bought it is because it came with a free video($20 total). I don’t know of I just broke in the call so much blowing it or what, but the cheap call brings home birds everytime.Lars

Is it the instrument or the musician??
Depends
You can kill ducks with any $7 call from Walmart……as long as you have the cadince down and know when (and when NOT) to call at em…..pretty much any call will work…..have you actually listend to live ducks? They sound like CRAP
In my opinion, location, cover (for hunters) and spread size/motion are more important than call type ever will be.
Goose hunting is a different can of worms……..Obviously location, cover (for hunters) and spread size/motion are keys to goose hunting success too, but calling also plays a HUGE roll…….Not just any old $15 Flute style goose call is going to cut it. You need at least a medium priced short-reed if you actually want to sound like a flock of geese.
I personally use a Winglock delrin that sells for about $60, and I love it…..Wish I had the cash to pick up a real high end call, because no doubt they are sweet, but my Winglock will do for now
P.S. Is it fall yet?

July 28, 2006 at 11:24 pm #18964no dout any call with kill ducks and geese, but a high dollar call with have better and more variable notes, last longer and most of the time they blow easier. again no dout a 7 dollar lohman call from wallmart with work, but try doing a hail call on that. now, i agree with what jake said with cover and the spread, but i honestly believe the MOST important factor to a successfull hunt is putting in the time and hard work to find a good spot. if you are where there are a pile of ducks and geese, it dont matter too much what your spread of dekes looks like or what your call sounds like. be where the ducks want to be and you will kill ducks BUT do your scouting. if it means missing a morning of hunting to find out where they are at 730 8 o clock or what fields thay are going to in the morning, its worth it. you arent going to find any new birds going to the same spot everyweekend where they “usually” are. but anyways, back to the calls. i have an array of different calls. i have a rich n tone original which i absolutly love for open water. i have a foiles migrators sraight meat honker and i absolutly love that call. and i also have an echo call that is more of a medium sounding call. i love all three. i have blown just about all of the other makes of calls, and these three stand out for me. it depends on how you call and what fits you. i would try a rnt for a duck call and a foiles for a goose.

July 31, 2006 at 1:25 pm #18999Lars. The Big River is really one of the best flute calls. The old Maple ones are the best sounding. The only thing is, they take way to much air. I agree, short reeds with a Big River in the mix is great.
