So it’s the off season (), and if we can’t actually go DUCK hunting, at least we can talk about it right?>

Anywho, we’re throwing around the idea of heading to Nebraska next year in order to extend the season a little bit……It would be an after Christmas thing, possibly into the first week of January .

Anybody have any experince hunting for ducks or geese in NE? I know we drove across the state Jan. 1st last year (on our way to Colorado) and the fowl were THICK along the Platte river (yeah, it drove me nuts )…..the Platte looks like an awesome place to hunt, but we are wondering what land access is around it…..public waters avaliable?

Also land access for geese…..The feilds and farm ponds along the Interstate were crawling with Canada’s!!!

Anybody have a Nebraska story to tell?

I took my first trip to Neb. last year and man that was a blast. We went during the last week of november, you know that coldest week of the year. It was my buddy’s second season hunting down there, but only about three times total. We were on the Mizz. river boardering SD. With his SD license he could legally hunt either side of the river. We went out of a village called niobara(SP?) and it was very interesting, I’ve been told by some people that there are sometimes 30-50 rigs over there when the hunting is hot. The river splits there and between the two main channels there is nothing but miles and miles of marsh, quite the sight. The channels are connected by these “trout stream” type channels that rarely freeze over because of the amount of current runnin’ through these babies. Anyway, there were only 4 rigs there at the most for our 2 day hunt, so we just putted up river checkling out the different channels (there are alot) and we finally jumped about 30 mallards out of one bend and set-up there. We were away from the truck for a total of 4 hours on the first day and we limited with 9 greenheads, 2 gaddys and a 99.9% perfect greenwing, all drakes, we also pulled a nice rooster that flew over the spread at the wrong time. The second day we shot nine 7 green, a bluebill and another gaddy before pulling the plug. It was freezing cold when we were there and when the dog would comeback from a water retrieve he would be ice in about 30 seconds. A dog is almost an absolute must, when we dropped ducks in the channel those birds were floating away instantly.

It was a very awesome experience and will do it again next year, but like you I would love to give that Platte River a shot, I see shows and it just looks sweet on that river. But I wonder if that is a place where you need to know someone or go with someone who has experience going down there for access or hunting spots.

    Lars,

Where did you stay when you were out there hunting?? I have future relatives (gittin married) that rent out a cabin for waterfowling near Nibrara and Springfield, SD. Was the name Tim and Mary Peterson???

Anyway, I was out that way on a cold weekend in November helping my future father-in-law bag a deer with my blackpowder and I heard that Tim and Mary had some people staying in their cabin from MN. Just curious if it was you boys.

If anyone wants to plan a trip out there, I have an in on some places to stay. Lars is right, the waterfowling is nothing short of phenomenal.
