Just a quick report for those interested

Me and a couple buddies spent the weekend attempting to decoy some snows in Southern South Dakota…….unfortunatly we didn’t have much luck with these smart early birds ……total was 4 Saturday afternoon and 7 Sunday……other than a flock of 500-600 that flew over a little to low Sunday morning right at shooting time that we scratched 2 out of, all other birds were singles.

The wind was rippin (25-30mph) both days….it was hard to keep stakes in the groud .

There were birds around though…..not any mind boggling flocks, YET……but very soon!!! Most ponds were frozen over Saturday, but were anywhere from 20-50% open by Sunday night.

Next few days should be golden out there…….we leave next Monday again for 7 straight days

Jake.. I was in Missouri over the weekend and we could hear flock after flock after flock flying at night… It continued at least for a few hours.. or until I moved to another fishing spot and it was too windy to hear anything by then.

They might be on their way?

Hey Cole……you should come out with us next week…..we’ve got an open spot!!!!

Me, Skinny, and Reinke are leaving Monday….those guys are coming back Thursday, I’m meeting a couple other buddies Thurs night and staying thru Sunday.

I know you don’t hunt geese anymore……but spring snows is an experince you’ll never forget!!!!

    Dave,
I’ve heard the same…….I’d say the main concentrations are in NW MO and Southern NE right now…….but not for long……by next weekend South Dakota will be the place to be!!! I wouldn’t be one bit suprised to see birds pushed as far up as North Dakota.

If you’re gonna do it, DO IT next weekend!!!

Jake. With the warm weather coming, the snow’s should be in SD very soon. NW Missouri is absolutly loaded right know. I just got back Sunday night and we beat the heck out of them. I may be making another trip to SD and do some more filming. Boy did we get some footage. Sounds like you guys had fun.

jake, when is your main spring break? we start this weekend and we’ll be out there for the main part of the week again. ……we’re not sure where we’re gonna end up, but hopefully the middle of the week we wont have to deal with as many hunters.

i am gonna be sad after this year……no more college spring breaks!

To tell you guys the truth, I wouldn’t waste yourtime going over there. We were out there for the first big storm and all day monday there was a huge push and they weren’t going north. We got some pretty good gunning in though, with the snow and the strong winds most of our shots were within 15-30 yards, but if ya head out I’d be real interested on how ya did.

Jake. I talked with the guys last night and they are in SD. They shot 196 on Saturday. They also said there are a pile of birds there.

Not trying to derail the thread, but how many guys shot 169 birds, and what are they gonna do with them?

Ok, thats not so bad, thanks for clearing it up. I only ask because last year I ran into 4 guys who were bragging about shooting 1009 snows on 1 trip. I wasn’t impressed, I was disgusted.

Depending on how many days there trip was, it could have been completely legal.

Right now there is such on over abundance of snow geese, they are damaging their breeding grounds to the point it could be hugely detrimental to the long term survival of snow geese.

There have been very liberal spring seasons put in place for the last 6-8 years, can’t quite remember when it started. I know I was still in SD then. Anyway, the point is, even if they did shoot 5000 birds, it’s really for the better of the goose.

I always filleted out the breast meat, then froze. The local Salvation Army in Watertown would take the frozen meat and distribute on holidays etc…

Fish. If you ever saw pictures of the tundra and the damage these birbs cause, you may understand. All the birds we shoot do not go to waste. They are really good made into jerky. Also donating to food shelves is great.
