Hunted the last day of the regular season on a grass field just north of town. The birds were really using the Zumbro river due to the freezing of most of the lake. The 4 clients limited out and we got 2 more to boot for us. We picked up at 3:15 and there were still some movement coming out of town. The 55th street field had 15 total between the two set-ups when we pulled the plug, not sure how they fared at the end of the day. We didn’t get out and set-up until 9:00 to 9:30 and we didn’t miss much as we only saw about three flocks cruising along before hand. With the wind being sw-wsw it was decently tough getting birds to swing around on their way out but we did manage ALL decoying shots, about half birds were on thier way back in when they decided to set in. This time of the year you really have to study the birds to see what they want to see and hear, some birds seemed to flare off the flag while others wanted to be welcomed in by calls, all the way in. Another huge difference was scouting, not the fields but the brids, about 85% of the birds around the refuges and out in the fields are not moving much on the ground, i.e. shells were the ONLY decoys we had out. Another guide service to the east of us in a corn field had all full-bodies and we out shot them. Studying the birds has just as much importance as the decoys, the fields and the calls. Good luck on the late season!
