Hey, hey, hey…Easy on the Koots comments. I may take offense.

    O.K., I’m back .
Actually, I was kind of regreting this “migration report” thread when I noticed the childish debates that had taken over . I thought folks were maybe beginning to focus elsewhere .
Chriss, your PM was correct, I am sick (but still hunting and working). I think it may be the boat trips that I have been taking on these diver trips .
Last weekend up north was great !
I resided in Nisswa all weekend and made my trips from there. Southern Cass County was the ticket for me .
Friday evening I was near Pine River and so were the giant mallards. Shot four and actually lost one. I think this was my only lost bird this year .
Saturday morning I deployed the diver spread , near Backus/Longville. This is my favorite way to hunt ducks.
We shot two redheads and two goldeneyes. Beautiful birds too. Decoying birds included buffleheads, mallards, wigeon, ringnecks, bluebills, megansers and even a flock of loons and swans! The spread looked sweet today!
Saturday afternoon we were back in the Pine River area for three more giant greenheads.
I did actually hunt Sunday morning !
Rain changed to snow at about 4:00 a.m. and the wind was 30-40 mph with gusts upto 50 mph .
Most duck hunters in the area probably rolled over and went back to sleep.
My brother-in-law and I did go though. We even deployed the entire diver spread. Luckily our boat/blind is covered and heated, but that did not matter when the time came to pick-up decoys after not firing a shot .
We decoyed mergansers, buffleheads, goldeneyes, canvasbacks and loons again.
We had a head wind traveling back to the landing. If I was half throtle water was coming over the front end, if I opened it up, I could not see through the snow pelting me in the face (or see a handheld GPS screen). We actually got that boat airborne twice. I do not know if my brother-in-law will ever hunt with me again.
All of the reports that I have been getting are great.
Most everyone that is willing to work for the birds (typical of late season) is having success !
The canadian geese seem to still be the topic of conversation across the state though. Lots of big birds providing for good shooting.
I almost forgot, HEAVYSHOT, OH MY GOD. This stuff is something else.
I did bring my boat back to the twin cities, but my wife is not too happy about that.
Where should I finish the season?
Bring ’em close, shoot straight and kill ’em dead!

As always lots of geese on the way in from the west. We had a huge flock move into the back yard late last night. 7:00 or so. Not sure if they were new birds or just coming from the feilds. They were new to the pond so I assume they were new to the area.

Lots of ducks getting up early this AM. Looked like primarily mallard. Hoping they were heading to eat not for warmer grounds. I’ll let you know what I see this after noon.

    OH-OH,
    It happened!
I scouted my way into the office today, from St. Paul to Rogers.
Boy did things snap up last night.
At 9:00 a.m. my truck was showing 9 degrees .
All of the birds that I did find (primarily geese, of course) were sitting on ice .
I too have heard the forecast, but I’m starting to pray things open back up .

I made it out again on Tuesday morning in the LaCrosse area and was pleasantly surprised. There were a ton of birds flying in the rain and wind. We only shot one goose and one green wing, but we had a bunch of mallards that would circle and wouldn’t quite commit. It was a blast just watching all the ducks and geese.

EYE-Guide No kidding about this time of year. Now that I am free from work until spring, I have too many choices. I wake up trying to decide what to do; Duck, deer, squirrel, or coon hunt. Then there is ice fishing soon But, soon the coyotes will be taking most of my time, as that is the ultimate for me

    Chris,
If you will be back in town next week, we may want to look a little harder at that pool 2 discusion.
Centrally located and guaranteed open water ?

Keep the reloads! But if you head west on 94 for about 5 to 6 hours, then head north or south form the freeway. You should be able to locate my hunny hole!

Let me know how it goes!

Locked UP! One of my hunting partners was out this AM.
    Lake one/ Locked up
Lake two/ (Always open when lake one is not.) Closed for buisness.

Looks like I’ll be goose hunting tommorow.

Good luck on the geese! Where the heck are they? I am not seeing the flocks like I used to! I think a lot of the shooting from Pool 2 has them off their normal flight patterns. I will have to wait for the late season, and see if the patterns go back to what I consider normal. For now, I will fish and deer hunt until I see more flights in my area.
