Apparently WI kept the 6 bird daily limit ?drakesdemiseResiding in St. Paul, MN doing weekly travel throughout the five state Upper MidwestPosts: 976October 18, 2005 at 12:02 pm #390329Nice shooting guys, had to be fun.
Apparently WI kept the 6 bird daily limit ?October 18, 2005 at 11:44 pm #10746Yep, but our all knowing DNR lowered the hen mallard limit to 1. Pretty sure the feds and everyone else is allowing 2, but someone here thinks that by us only shooting 1 we can save thousands of them…….(yeah, for the guys in Mo and Ar)

October 19, 2005 at 12:35 am #10749from as long as i can remember duckhunting we only had 1 year that we could shoot two. tell you the truth i would rather have a big fat greenhead layen next to me than a suzie. i dont mind the one hen one bit. if you think about it tho, by killing one hen, it is possible to kill an infinate amount of ducks. kill one hen, you are killing 8 or 9 ducks that she would of possibly had, and out of those 8 or 9 maybe one or two would of lived to have 8 or 9 more and so one and so on. me, i will shoot a suzie most times we are out. but i dont really wish we could shoot 2 of them. i agree tho, that mn is kinda crappy with their 4 duck limit.

October 19, 2005 at 1:38 am #10750Yes, I agree, one hen could have produced many ducklings and so on and so on. My pointis, either EVERYONE in the fly way shoots 1 or everyone should be able to shot two. The fact that the WI DNR mandates we can only have one is not gonna stop the boyz down in Illinois, Missourri, Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi from only shooting 1 or none.

October 19, 2005 at 2:39 am #10755yai know i agree, same with mn having a 4 duck limit and wi and the rest of the states having 6, it dont make alot of sence. here in mn and wi we can shoot 4 mallards, but in nd you can shoot 5.just dont make much sence. but whats even worse is we raise and protect the ducks here espacially the rare and more sought ones like the cans and the pintails, and alot of them migrate over to mexico where they can shoot 20 of our ducks a day. that makes me mad too.

October 19, 2005 at 12:30 pm #10760Well boyz, tell you the truth nobody should shoot a suzzie. If you want to go ahead, but it is more rewarding to shoot a fat greenhead. I would rather shoot no ducks than one suzzie. So I AGREE with the DNR about keeping one suzzie and not jumping to two. Everyone arguing about them shooting two and we only get to shoot one! Be the true sportsman and only kill drakes than you know that you have done your part to help the population. By the way it is called waterfowl management!

October 19, 2005 at 10:30 pm #10782Jewler..I agree totally and I do my best to try and shoot greenheads. We have all busted a suze on occasion.
Let me seeif I can make my point in a different way.
How would you like to pay 5 dollars a gallon for gas and be limited to say 10 gallons a week so that the folks down south can pay $1.50 agallon for a 20 gallon limit??

October 20, 2005 at 7:49 pm #10823I don’t think that is a good comparison fisha. I see your point, but gas is a “need” (boat, tow vehicle, etc). But on the otherhand, shooting a suzie is not. If you want to shoot a suzie, go right ahead. If you want to shoot two, buy an Iowa license. If you think you’ve been cheated, call your legislature, and make your point heard by attending the yearly waterfowl meetings.

October 20, 2005 at 9:40 pm #10825Duk…as I said, I don’t WANT to shoot more hens, just wish it was a level playing field. I have e-mails many reprresentatives and dnr officials.

October 21, 2005 at 3:00 am #10829As far as I am concerned…..The one hen limit is a meaningless joke. It will do nothing to improve the duck population( you can check with actual waterfowl biologist to verify this…..not internet armchair biologists please)and it will just result in more hens stomped into the mud.
Lets face…..the average waterfowler can’t tell what kind of duck he has in his hand….much less in the air!
It is a feel=good rule that does nothing!
Well….except maybe cause a few more guys to accidentaly break the law!

October 21, 2005 at 12:27 pm #10833SLee,
If you can’t tell what kind of duck is flying in the air then you better get a book and start studying and stay home before you go out or better yet get out before the season, springtime and summer and just watch the birds. It works. I have no problem identifying ducks at a distance. Plus if you don’t know what you are shooting at, Do you think they might be out of range???? Anyone that puts anytime in the duckblind should know ducks. I don’t mean just a couple weekends in Oct. either. But you would know that though since you are an expertOctober 21, 2005 at 12:27 pm #390991SLee,

If you are stomping ducks in the mud, you should hang the waders up! As for the 2 ducks would stop the stomping, huh, bs! It would still happen. I truely believe that if you can not identify a bird in the air, drake or hen, then time is needed to study the birds. I am not saying that you do this or blaming anyone, it goes for everyone. YEah the occasionaly hen goes down, oh well, but when it is on purpose then a guy needs to sit back, maybe work the birds closer, get closer more identifable(?) shots. Just my $.02.October 21, 2005 at 12:56 pm #390996Slee,

Just my $.02.October 21, 2005 at 3:32 pm #10849I don’t think having one or two hens in the bag limit will make a difference to the number being illegally shot and stomped, a mis-ID is a mis-ID, or not caring is not caring. One thing that really helps tell drakes form hens, if it is a sunny day, is to get the sun at your back instead of in your face or to the side. Also, letting them work the dekes and get in close helps ALOT. Getting them in close is probably just good advise anyway you look at it.
I really also don’t think taking a hen a day, or even two, by hunters in WI and MN, probably has a whole lot of impact on the duck population. Habitat and breeding conditions, predators, etc., probably make a much bigger difference.
I don’t mind the one hen a day. Wouldn’t really care if it were 2 either. I kinda like having one, which allows for a mistake in the first half hour, when it is dark and harder to ID drakes and hens.

October 21, 2005 at 7:21 pm #10828I can id birds with the best of them. I would venture to say that I kill more ducks and geese than 99% of the guys out there.
But…..I aint talking about me. I am talking about the average Mn waterfowler….who is lucky to kill 10 ducks a year…and shoots whatever flies by. When they get them in hand….unless it is a drake mallard….they have a hard time telling what it is.
It just the way it is. Just talk to some COs and they will tell you.
