Another wasted opener

Once again the mentality of the simple minded (DNR)outweigh common sense. Why on earth we continue to open duck season when its still 80 degrees outside is beyond me. If we (Wisconsin) could have waited about a week or two for the opener, we could have an opening weekend with cool temps and fall colors PLUS our season could have gone to mid December.

INSTEAD…If I want to go duck hunting I need to quickly find some camo sandals, shorts and sleevless shirt. With the predicted temps, the ducks will be spoiled before they hit the water after you shoot them.

Good luck to those of you going after the quackin birds…Im going fishing. My opener will be the 15th.

Almost forgot. Any chance that any of you who hunted the youth hunt have any duck wings left over? I could use a few for my pup. Maybe get him in the water a little this weekend. It will be crazy enough without me trying to be out there with everyone else PLUS trying to train a young dog.

whats the difference if it is 80 degrees and your wearing a t shirt, or if its 15 degrees and your wearing 3 pairs of socks and 2 pairs of pants and waders and 3 shirts and a parka. most of the people unlike you and me dont like to hunt the bitter cold, so they have to cater to the majority of the people that want a warm weather season. plus i have a hard time finding places to hunt that last week. usually end up on the lake but they dosent usually stay open too much longer than dec 4th

I agree with fishaholik I hate having to strip down to my tshirt at the end of opening day. Its just too early. I know for sure that none of my opener hunts have been as memorable as my later season hunts. The cooler weather and the fall colors add to the hunt a lot for me.

I probably shouldnt complain though because hunting is hunting and I should be happy to get out whenever I can.

DNR guys don’t need to be weather guessers, all they need to do is read the almanac or look at past years.

As for the masses. I am glad they don’t hunt after it gets colder. It seems a good bit of the foolish sky busters seem to disapear after it gets colder….hmmmm, maybe a coincidence?

You have fun Jake. Like I said, My opener will be the 15th.

If the season opened at sunrise, or at least 9 am like Minnesota, you could be off the water before the real heat set in.

The noon opener has got to be my most hated rule right now.

I hunt when it’s hot, I hunt when it’s cold. I love the late season too, but it’s tough to hunt a solid block of ice. Going past the first week in December is great for field hunters, but I just don’t find many late season fields being used in this area. If someone knows different, i am available for a mid December field hunt!

As far as hunting Pool 7 and north, I bet you could count on one hand the number of days you can hunt water past Dec. 7th.

    Moss knows!!!

Last year, Dec. 4 was the day most of the backwaters froze over (Lake Onalaska was solid by the 5th or 6th)…..and this was about as late as it ever gets .

Any later than the first week of December and we’re just losing days we can hunt

I agree keep it Oct. 1, hell Iowa had their opener 2 weeks ago. The idea is to help control some of the local birds and maintain a season that is not shut down because of the freeze. Hey that is just more birds for the rest to shoot, thanks.

If the season started in 2 weeks, there would be no teal (at least bluewings) and very few woodducks around. Which happen to be my favorite!

Don’t hunt……….your not going to see anyone .

A guy can atleast attempt to shoot ducks right now, but come Mid-December good luck finding water that isn’t froze up where you can hunt……..

Seasons are fine…….bet you weren’t complaining 4-5 years ago when it was snowing on opening weekend……..give me a break.

Not trying to be an idiot here, but this post was one that wasn’t needed. Lets talk waterfowl hunting not what the DNR should of done here and there.

Good luck to everyone this weekend………………….I am going shirtless if that matters. Use mud to camo up.

With these mild temps. the woodies and teal will still be here in two weeks thats if the youth day didnt scare them all away.

I have broken ice to make pot holes for them…kinda like that baseball movie. If you make it, they will come. Ever seen ducks pour into the only open hole for miles? You guys go ahead and blast all the local birds, as well as them little teal and woodies. I preffer to wait for the big orange footed mallards. THEY, Like me, won’t be out there until it gets COLD.

In addition, those who need to put kerosene around their ankles won’t be crowding me once it gets cold.

Good luck to those of you going in shorts. Be safe and have fun. .

    Fishahollic,

I am just wondering why it matters when the opener is if you only go hunting when it gets cold out?. It may be 70 degrees on Oct 15th! It wasn’t very hot last weekend.

Or do you just want to be able to hunt later in the year?

If thats the case….you may be in luck…or maybe not knowing the DNR…….but they are talking about having a split season.

If the opener was the 15th and went till 15 Dec…it would be cooler to start with. Its hard to hunt ducks with in Shorts, sandals and tank tops. In years like we had last year, we may be able to get a few ducks come Dec, as it was, they din’t even get down until after our season was over. The local ducks will bail out from the pressure and the urge to head south in about a week or two. The birds from up North don’t head this way till it gets COLD up there. Not hard to figure out how this works. Unless it gets cold early up in Cananda(before Nov), The the majority of the birds won’t be here until Nov/Dec. What everyone is shooting at now is mostly local birds and teal that head south LONG before the other birds do.
I also find that alot of the rude folks don’t have the “cajones” to be out there when its cold and miserable in say Nov/Dec.
