Was out today doing some “lookin around” and saw quite a few woodies(40 or more), a good number of Blue wings(20-30), and even a few Mallards(12-15). If the weather continues on its cooling trend, I may even hunt the early season. If its not below 60, I aint going. At least I got the boat ready, the go devil runs great, and I have a few spots picked out to hunt this year that hopefully I won’t get crowded out of again this year.

As far as river scouting goes…….

I’ve been scouting 4 different pools on a regular basis for the last 2 months, including last nights run to check our opening weekend area…….Results you ask???……well, not as impressive as I was hoping .

There are wood-ducks pretty much everywhere in the backwaters….We busted out a couple of holes last week with 50-60+ woodies on them

But as far as other species go (you can only get two woodies ya know ), there are definatly pools holding more birds than others right now…..I think it mainly has to do with the availablity of FOOD (rice anyone? )…….find the food and you’ll find the teal and other misc. big ducks…….find the parks and you’ll find the mallards .

I also think we’ve had a fair push of bluewings through the area already……..I haven’t seen as many around now as a couple weeks ago (before the youth day ).

All in all, I think it’s going to be a pretty standard opener, comparable to the last few years…….LOTS of guys and just barely enough ducks to keep people happy.

So with that being said, I’m ready to rock ’em!!!! Lets get it on!!!

Jake, these birds weren’t anywhere near any rice. In fact, I haven’t find hardly any rice anywwhere around Goose Island. Plenty of “other” food around though.

If I pout 4-5 bags of Cracked corn out now, then hunt near it in Late Oct, would that be baiting? Sure would be funny to see some of those @#$ holes who ruined my hunts get tickets for hunting over it on opening.

That’s kinda my point Fish…….I wouldn’t call 20-30 teal and 12-15 mallards a big concentration of ducks ……I’m talkin several flocks of teal upwards of 50-60 birds……and bigger bunches of mallards that range from 15-50 bird flocks .

Again……find the rice and find the ducks

(P.S. not all the areas I have been looking at are open to hunting )

Went out scouting this weekend, saw a good number of woodies, but ZERO teal and mallards. Now, the area we are hunting isn’t known for early season mallards, but we usually see some teal and saw zippo.

May be a tough weekend for us aside from the 2 woodies each.

On a positive note, saw alot of drakes with beautiful color for this time of the year.

Also, I think I saw less teal this summer fishing than I had in the last ten years. Seemed to see more mallards though.

We have been seeing alot of green heads and teal sitting on the small bodies the past couple of weeks. Hopefully the will get moved around for the opener.
