Other than Shooting ducks, what are everyone’s reasons for going duck hunting?

One of the main reasons for me is spending time with my dad. Another is getting to see the sun rise over our freshly set out decoys and hearing the first ducks wake up for the morning. The essence of the swamp, a smell that only a true hunter can love, and never being able to get it off your clothes. Its the experience of going back in time (with a few minor changes) and doing the same things that our ancestors did to survive. Being alone except for you and a small group of close friends. It’s the thrill of the hunt, seeing that the decoys that you’ve been setting out for the last hour, have fooled a flock of ducks into gun range. Then, finally the smell of freshly burned gun powder.
Thats what gets me through the amount of time until I can do it again.

i used to duck hunt. the reasons i went before was friends would go out and see how poorly each one shot, i loved the sound of boats racing on the water and hearing their motors rind-ding-ding as they hit a tree stump, and try new calls or techniques. you may not always get your duck, but you always saw something in the wilderness that not eveyone gets to see.

It’s all about family. The stories we tell have very little to do with the hunt. They are stories about the shack, fun had, and stupid things we all did. This is the time of year that we all take time from our busy schedules and get together. Nothing can replace family.

Hunting with my dad growing up. We hunted Winnie for bills and I loved getting out there well before light and feeling the cold crisp October air on my face as we headed to our spot….my dad thought I was crazy since it was cold but there was just something about the smell of the lake, all the stars and hunting with dad. Best days I have ever had duck hunting……birds or not.
I still hunt but it is getting hard for my dad to get around but he and I usually get out chasing walleyes on Cutfoot in the fall so that is great!

It’s going to be hot, buggy and probably crowded out in the slough on Saturday and there is no place I’d rather be. As I read what my son wrote I realized I couldn’t have said it better. What I will say is this is our thirteenth opener together—he started hunting with me when he was 3 and hasn’t missed an opener since then. The early years had alot of naps and treats but he also sat through rain and snow storms and rarely complained and then it was usually if I wanted to pull up early. Hunting is about alot of good things and very few of them have anything to do with killing. I thank the good Lord every day for my hunting partner—even if the boy is going to give me grief when he reads this.

I like the camaraderie with my inlaws, playing euchre and drinking a little beer.
