As of the last couple years I have really taken a shine to the feild hunting both ducks and geese. I used to have the greatest time with diver(bluebills), but there is nothing like those late season whistlers when there is just a little pocket of open water left. It’s cold as heck, but when they see the deeks they can’t resist…plus they are awesome looking birds.

Big beautiful GREEN HEADS! There’s nothing like hunting them from a bean field on ND.

    Is it time? LETS GO!

Bull Ruddys….that is where its at.

Just kiddin…I grew up shooting bluebills on winnie with my dad….nothing better than big water bills.
I have seen the mallard tornados, screaming teal and huge flocks of canadian geese but nothing gets my blood boiling like the wind howling through the wings of a flock of bills diving on to a lake at mach 2 just to make a couple swings hook the line and suck right in…..I can close my eyes and see them plain as day….awesome.

I like to shoot all ducks and its really hard to choose one over another since they all have their own good qualities. Drake Mallards are beautiful, teal are fast and small, bluebills are big and fast, bufflehead are lighting quick, and cans are smart. The one I think I like the best though are the big Greenheads seeing them land in the decoys almost makes them to pretty to shoot at, ALMOST.

BLUEBILLS The way they come in, wings cupped, feet down, right down the decoy line all at 60mph. they ALL taste like liver to me . Ya Ya it all depends on how or the way you cook them .

You are over cooking them if they taste like liver, small ducks that I breast out are like boneless chicken breasts when I’m done….require only about three minutes per side at the most…..lager ducks about 4 – five minutes a side……they have to be a little pink in the middle. If you cook them with a little pink they taste like steak.

Teal the way they dip see doodle through the set make for a very difficult shot and they are the best eating for sure. I cut them up in to small bite size pieces and wrap them with bacon and a pinkie finger nail size jalapeno pepper and soak them in zesty Italian dressing and grill them…..they melt in your mouth.
