Just wondering what everyones favorite duck is to hunt? My personal favorite so far is the Wood duck. The colors are so vibrant and awesome. My second favorite is the pintail. I am hoping to get a pin this year for the wall

GOOD ONE, MY FAVORITE DUCK WAS ONE WE DON’T GET TO SEE MUCH ANYMORE, THE WIDGEON YOU COULD SHOOT A COUPLE OUT OF THE FLOCK, GET BACK ON THE CALL AND CALL THEM BACK IN FOR A COUPLE MORE. TO BAD YOU DON’T SEE MANY ANYMORE.

I would say the mallard. Nothing better than working a flock into the decoys, with the slow wide turns and the anticipation.

Garvi, when you say there are not as many widgeon “anymore”, how far back are you refering? We seemed to see as many the last two years as we have the 10 or so years before that.

I WAS REFERING BACK TO THE LATE 70’S TO EARLY 80’S WE USED TO HAVE ALOT OF WIDGEON FLYING THROUGH THIS FLYWAY, I REMEMBER WE WOULD FILL UP ON WIDGEON AND GET A FEW MALLARDS, YOU SEE SOME NOW IN THE REFUGES BUT NOT ANYWAY NEAR THE NUMBER BACK THEN, I CANT EVEN REMEMBER THE LAST TIME I GOT A WIDGEON, MAYBE BECAUSE THEY WERE SO DUMB TO COME BACK IN AFTER YOU SHOT AT THEM WE SHOT OURSELVES IN THE FOOT BY SHOOTING THEM OFF.

Field hunting late season mallards over shells.

The tornado of 150+ birds and waiting in anticipation for small groups peeling off to land. And watching the dog as his head pivot back and forth as ducks come into and out of his field of view.

If you have never done it and you get a chance to try it you should jump on the chance.

This is my favorite way to shoot them. Does anyone else feel the same way?

Thanks. I didn’t really start duck hunting until 89 or so, so I didn’t know how far back you were talking.

We get a decent number of widgeon each year. I have one on my wall, got one last year that was probably even nicer but didn’t want to mount another one. I think they a re a darn nice looking duck, one of my favorites as well. I even have a dozen widgeon dekes, they respond well to those dekes and a wistle call. Would love to see alot of them around.

I think field hunting any waterfowl is the best. Seeing the tornado’s for white geese to canada’s to the massive flows of canadian mallards, hard to beat. All the while you are laying concealed, heart jumping out of your chest, trying to remind yourself, pick a bird, don’t flock shoot!!!

After last year id say greenwing teal are the most fun. I shot two males in one day last year and they were both really pretty birds with the red head and the green eye patch. I couldnt believe I was actually able to hit them they came right out of the fog and buzzed right over our heads.

Im surprised nobody has mentioned spoonbills yet

I got a spoonbill last year. Not sure what to think of them yet. In one way, they are pretty ugly, but in another way the spoon is pretty cool looking. I decided to have him mounted along with my first duck ever, a greenwing teal. I also have a beautiful drake woodie that is getting mounted. Eventually, I would like to have one of all the common ducks in our flyway on the wall. I am so ready to hunt I am about to explode

As of the last couple years I have really taken a shine to the feild hunting both ducks and geese. I used to have the greatest time with diver(bluebills), but there is nothing like those late season whistlers when there is just a little pocket of open water left. It’s cold as heck, but when they see the deeks they can’t resist…plus they are awesome looking birds.
