I heard that possibly we maybe not be haveing our 60 days of hunting. supposedly duck populations are down over 25%. so now the Fed’s want to take the days and limits down. i heard going from a 60 day season with 6 ducks a day. to a 45 day season and 4 ducks a day. possibly but most likely not but 30 day season and 4 ducks.

July 13, 2005 at 11:42 pm #8962Yeah, I saw that episode of three guys shooting 5 pinnies a day for what, a week or so. Then they say it won’t impact the numbers. Are they serious? What are they local pinnes??? Anyhoo, I’m hoping for a split 45 day which is an option for MN, I’m tired of watching thousands of ducks move through the area, during late goose, weeks after the season closes. As for the limits I think they will lower them, but I’m hoping for a 4 or 5 daily. I know that is not a huge cut—but it is a cut.
As for No. Dak. I was up there fishing during june in the area I hunt in, south central, man was it dry, dry, dry. I haven’t talked to anyone up there in a couple of weeks, but they have been getting some rain, hopefully enough to fill some potholes.

July 14, 2005 at 3:36 am #9011i dont think they will change any thing from last year, the pop surveys are about the same from last year. http://www.ducks.org/News/2005BreedingSurvey.asp i think we just had too warm of a year and too less water. when they did migrate they just didnt settle too much around here. except for the refuges which is another thing. i know everyone says it but the ducks to flock straight to the refuges. and the ones that dont know they are there go with the ones who do and that makes for alot of your crappy hunting. how many times each year do you guys go out hunting and see maybe 10 ducks in the morning and then either drive through or by the local refuge and see a hundred thousand?

July 14, 2005 at 2:40 pm #9014Fish, I agree with your thoughts on upcoming season format. On the otherhand, last year I had one of the best years waterfowl hunting that I have had. I finally broke down and spent the time and money to scout…scout…scout. Yes it’s more work then I was used to but it pays big dividends in the end. I read this somewhere and agree totally: “3 days of scouting = 1 good day of shooting.” It’s getting closer….wasn’t someone doing a countdown, we’ve got to be in the 50’s by now!

July 14, 2005 at 3:46 pm #9015Scouting is definatly the most important aspect of the hunt around here (MN in general). I rarely hunted a spot last year that I hadn’t at least visited the day before. Lots of guys have one spot they go to every time they hunt……that will work sometimes, but if you want to consistantly kill ducks, you have to SCOUT . I feel very lucky to live close to the places I hunt and am able to scout more than most would.
as far as season dates go, they won’t be set until mid/late August as usual…..but everything I’ve have seen as of late points to another 60/6 season. I guess I’d be VERY suprised if it wasn’t a 60/6 .
48 DAYS!!!!

July 15, 2005 at 7:12 pm #9020I’m on board. Scouting has been the biggest key for me. We started scouting hard a couple of years ago. Not only have we found more birds, but new spots to hunt.

nubbinbuckPosts: 922August 2, 2005 at 7:29 pm #9137I just spoke to a hunting buddy that owns a house in Leeds, ND. HE was just up there, and there were mixed stories about the year’s hatch. Apparently, they got the rains during nesting and a quite a few might have been destroyed. The locals did see a fair amount of re-nesting attempts, so cross your fingers.
