A buddy of mine is trying to talk me into going to shoot snows next weekend (the 2nd). I have been chasing spring snows for about the last 4 or 5 years but have always done it, and done well in early march. I keep telling my buddy that it will be way late, and we would be lucky to catch them in even ND, but he is persistant. So, for those of you who have been out there recently, or live out there…what are your thoughts? Talking warming temps this week into next, so I am figuring the majority of the geese will be gone….Thoughts???

Go to http://www.nodakoutdoors.com This will give you all the info you need. I was thinking about heading out there this weekend, but kind of sounds like the geese may be up in the Devil’s Lake area by then. Check out that site..you’ll find your answer..

March 24, 2005 at 4:33 pm #6146I talked to several hunting buddies that live out in ND and in SD, a lot or majority have moved through. I have gone in early march to mid march and have done well. I have also gone in late march but failed to do so well. Personnally I would plan for a trip earlier in the year. Good luck.

March 29, 2005 at 4:08 pm #353124Anyone want to change their mind on this yet! 60-70 degree days and snow geese??? I decided not to go, but he is still going. I wish him the best, but I can see a bad report coming. I’ll be bass fishin’ instead.
March 30, 2005 at 3:28 pm #6165I here ya fishpep, anything is better than work, but with this nice weather I’d rather save my vacation for spring bass fishing or fall mallards. Only some much vacation time to use and too much good fishing and hunting to use it for. Plus the wife has been begging to go on vacation somewhere. I’m thinking an ocean fishing adventure, if she goes for it, life is good.

April 5, 2005 at 5:18 pm #6197Well buddy ended up going. Said it was more of a good weekend for a sun tan than a good weekend to be snow goose hunting. Said he had a good time, but they only ended up shooting 7 geese in 4 days, between 3 guys. Glad I sat this one out. Anyways, ended up sneeking on the ones they got, couldn’t get any migrators to come into the decoys. Seemed like a pretty quick migration to me.

April 5, 2005 at 8:25 pm #6198I’ve got a buddy who’s going back out to SOUTH Dakota Wed-Sun.
Apparently the connections he has out there said they absoloutly slaughtered the geese over dekes last weekend. They’re hunting them like honkers…..just gotta find a roost pond and the feild they’re using.
There aren’t many around, but the ones the see come in like they’ve never seen a decoy before in their life……10yd shots are common
and the other great thing….no other hunters around to screw anything up

buckmasterPosts: 776April 5, 2005 at 8:42 pm #6199Heard the snow goose hunting is coming to an end. I guess with 60-70 degree weather I fully understand why.
Hunted plenty of snows in my days and you will find that shooting birds off the roost is going to be a 1 time deal, because they will never come back. Had 8 guys this year that snuck up on a drainage pond that was holding 300 or so, well it was more like a massicure then a hunt, but boy was it fun. I ended up shooting 14 times before the birds were far enough out of range and when the smoke cleared there where 63 on the ground. WOW was that fun!!! We knew what was going to happen and yes they never came back again. We checked that pond for the next 3 days and not a 1 came back, but we were willing to take the chance since the birds weren’t decoying well for us either.
Your right Jaker, the birds probably have never seen a decoy before cause most of them haven’t. Shooting alot of juvies right now and they are dumber then a box of rocks. All in all they eat the same I guess and as far as I know they die the same to.
Best of luck to all or any that go again.

April 5, 2005 at 9:45 pm #6200Yep you’re right Jake, makes things alot easier when you aren’t driving out there blind with only the internet to rely on approximate bird locations. I’ve been there before, now I know the area’s pretty well out there and have a couple of connections myself. Never hurts to have someone that lives there call you when the birds are there. Tell your buddy good luck. 10 yard shots on decoying snows!!!! WOW! Haven’t had that since the first year of the spring conservation season, juvie’s or not, they have difinetly gotten smarter.
