That would be sweet John
It’s really way to early to tell where we are going to be at. We’ve got our dates picked so we’re gonna go where the geese are . But by the way things are shaping up it looks like we could be headed north .
Geese are pouring into southern Nebraska today, and with no snow line to stop them, they have no reason to stop. I can see them being well into ND by the third week of March .
I thought this was pretty cool…..it’s a nexrad satelite image from earlier this morning. All the green spots you see are supposedly migrating geese!!!!

Satelite GeeseFebruary 15, 2005 at 12:04 am #5734last year when i was out there, we were NO WHERE near a snow line. Heck, i was wearing shorts for goodness sake..lol. but there were birds! we never saw any huge areas stacked, but there were hotspots of geese, enough to make us happy!

February 15, 2005 at 2:25 pm #5740That’s very true. SD has no snow as of now. I’ve been keeping in close contact with the locals, they haven’t come across any snows yet, but like you said, March is a long way from now.
I sure wish we could shoot speckles in the spring, you could get some really cool mounts!!! I’ve had them and canada’s buzz me when pass shooting. I thought the one greater was going to clip his wings on the top wire of the barb fence as he passed right over the top of me. Now look what you’ve done, I’m all worked up about waterfowl hunting again!!

buckmasterPosts: 776February 16, 2005 at 7:20 pm #5753Good to see others are interested in killing these flee bitin’ feather balls…….Ribeye in the sky? I thought that was Sandhill. In my neck of the woods we just call them “sky carp” and that suits them well I would say.
Buddy in Mitchell, SD has reported that snows are reaching there neck of woods already (not great numbers but they are showing up) and have been all week. Hard for me to believe, but he said he the same thing and says it is true. Last week I also recieved reports from NE that there has been great numbers entering there state as well. With temps 70-80 degrees in Texas and Kansas, I don’t find it hard to believe that a great amount of birds have left these states or are leaving. Squaw creek and the Missouri corridor are both loading fast and holding good numbers of birds.
I know I have been going the 1st weekend in March for the last 2 years now and last year we hit it good, but the 3rd weekend seemed to be even better for Nebreska. Now the year before it was worthless with warm weather and birds flying high. These birds don’t live 20 years for nothing I will say that, they never seem to do the same pattern. I understand what you guys are going thru that are still in college. I was there not to long ago and we would start some years in MO and end up in SD the magority of the time before we would find huntable numbers of snows. If you want to get into mass quanties of birds at that time of the year I would say SD or ND is going to be your best bet. That is just what I have learned from past experiences. Gotta go to the birds though.
Will be in the same area again this year, but date wise it will be a weekend thing where you call a buddy, the birds are there, you pack up your stuff and off you go. Good luck to everyone who goes this year.
Knock em’ dead.

All of the sudden, the sky opened up and thousands of geese started raining in right on top of me. I just laid there for about 20 minutes as the birds just kept coming down. The flock would raise up and settle back down right back on top of me. All the while they kept pouring out of the sky. I tried calling my buddy on the cell just so he could here how loud, unfortunately he wasn’t available. It’s simply amazing how loud these birds are. At times I would look up from my position and the birds knew I wasn’t suppose to be there, but I assume they felt safe within the flock. When I sat up and blasted 4 3.5″ T’s at them, they weren’t so content. I picked up geese for a quite a while that day!!!

February 19, 2005 at 11:57 am #5826I just got home from the Aberdeen area. I didn’t get to spend too much time outside, but I didn’t spot a single goose. There isn’t any open water so hopefully that factor will slow down the migration. There isn’t any snow either. They are suppose to get 1-3″ of the white stuff this weekend though.

Sounds like the geese really started pullin out of the basin in Nebraska and PILLED into Sodak on Saturday. I’ve heard reports of snows all the way by Watertown already.

buckmasterPosts: 776March 2, 2005 at 4:51 pm #5973Rainwater Basin is holding 4 millions birds right now, but they are saying there is huntable numbers in SD right now.
Buddy called last weekend and said there was a huntable number on the NE & MO border, but with family conflicts I wasn’t able to make it down. They ended up getting 66 in 3 days all over decoys. He was saying there was a group 245,000 in the area he guessed, but guess numbers like that is like counting gravel rocks in a gravel pit.
Depending on weather I say 1 week and SD should be good as gold. Then again hard guessing what these birds are going to do today let alone a week.
P.S. If you don’t have a tube extension for this type of hunting then GET one!!!!!!…………..a big PLUS!!!!!!

buckmasterPosts: 776March 2, 2005 at 6:26 pm #5975I am sure they are moving today with the temps ranging from 45-52 degrees all the way into ND, so I am sure there is a push on now. I know they are killing a lot of birds in NE right now, so you might be right. From what I gather from my buddy and other hunters the birds seem to be feeding East to West and vise-versa, then heading back down to roost. A lot of the ponds in SD are still froze over now, so I am sure that is a main reason the birds haven’t settled in SD.
Knock em’ dead boyzzzz…………..
