Cant believe goose/duck regular season is over.DNR really screwed up this year. They alway’s are trying to promote new or young hunters, well then why would the season end before Thanksgiving school holiday? Damn that ticks me off. We as hunters need to voice our concerns at public input meetings or e-mail DNR about this. I for one believe in a split season. And dividing the state into a Noth/South zone and set the season acording to average freeze up time. What do you all think?????

Absolutely. A split season and push back the opener one to two weeks.
A North/South zone is a good idea too.
Anything is better than what we have now.

November 29, 2004 at 4:20 pm #4739WE HERE IN THE SOUTH ZONE CAN STILL HUNT UNTILL SUNDAY BUT THAT DOESN’T HELP BECAUSE THERE IS VERY FEW DUCKS HERE, THIS IS THE WORST SEASON I HAVE SEEN I HAVE ONLY SHOT TWO DUCKS AND I FEEL LUCKY TO HAVE DONE THAT.

November 29, 2004 at 4:32 pm #4740Actually I should have mentioned that I’m referring to the Minnesota DNR regulations. But just out of curiousity how is the Wisc. season set up?

November 29, 2004 at 5:03 pm #4741I heard form some relaible sources the mallards are decently thick right now, but you have to find em.
Terrible season for me too. A couple of decent days, and last week was OK. But, overall, a big step down. Not many good weather days either, and lots of ducks sitting in and staying in the refuge. Seemed to be more food in the refuge this year.
Matt, we opened the first weekend in Oct., open for a week, closed for 5 days, reopened then through this upcoming Sunday (Dec. 5th)

November 29, 2004 at 6:44 pm #4746we have the north/south zone in Iowa and Ive found it to be a pain in the [censored]. Because wichever zone is open, people from the other zone will travel to the other zone which causes overcrouding on spots and many arguements. But true it does have it’s good points but also has some side affects.

November 29, 2004 at 8:33 pm #4755Hey Dan, who told you there were ducks left on the river?
I think the MN DNR should look at the way WI is set up right now. In my opinion, that would be the ideal system. I don’t think there is any reason to extend the season out much past thanksgiving weekend though, as in a normal year (this year was FAAAR from normal) we would be pretty locked up by now.
What they’ll do when we get back to only a 45 or even 30 day season is anybody’s guess

Not who you think!!!
3 of the last 4 years, the hunting has been good after Thankgiving. I really like the season as WI has it set up right now.

November 29, 2004 at 11:18 pm #4757I have a pond in central mn. and have carefully maintained a natural occuring wild rice crop. (actually the ducks planted it) I just make sure the water keeps moving. In the past we have had great shoots and this year there were lots of birds early (before the season) but they dissapeared right before the early opener…..and as far as I know no one got to them for the youth season……so we had high hopes for a good opener but we ended up dissapointed with about a bird a peice for the two days…..just not many birds around and no idea where they went…..one clue was that we recieved 3-4 inches of rain just before the opener which created lots of hiding places……not many birds spread way apart……
I have a camp in southern manitoba and I will tell you where the birds were…….in the wheat fields…….there was water every where and the farmers could not get the wheat out of the fields. some was still standing the rest was in windrows surrounded by water……we had poor mallard shoots up there only because the birds never had to leave the fields same thing with the geese. The shoots in the marsh were good with lots of varity divers to puddlers.the last part of the season in minnesota I got out to swan lake twice…..we hit the new birds on a strong n.w. wind filled out with mallards both times……but the refuge never filled with migrating mallards…..question is where are they….either they flew thru…..or they are not around in the numbers that we are told that there are…….
questions of the early season……..with out it we stand the chance of early frost and the local birds leave…..it has happened to me several times…..since most birds we get on opener are woodies and teal…they up and leave when it freezes….and if you go too late well all the water is locked up….(as you all know this year is very unusal, heck even in canada i was swating bugs in the blind in the middle of oct)….so i am with some of you guys……drop the limit and split the season……who shoots 6 ducks anyway…..the last i heard from the Minn DNR the ave bag (using a spinning wing decoy) was one bird per person.
on another note we need to look at habitat not the seasons to bring the birds back……all you have to do is look west to the dakotas and north to canada. lots of habitat lots of birds.

paffNovember 30, 2004 at 12:40 am #4759Now that the deer season is over, I and a friend got back out to the duck blind. It was a great day to be out there. From the time we got to the blind until the end of shooting time, we had ducks flying. Our shooting was a disgrace , we should have limited out, but didn’t. Most all ducks we seen were Mallards with a few black ducks and cans. There were also quite a few pintails around. Today was one of the best this whole season. What was really nice is there were very few people out (6 vehicles in the lot) . We are planning on hitting it again tomorrow and all weekend.

November 30, 2004 at 1:37 am #4760I agree with paff TOTALLY. I hunt in Manitoba twice each year too. My experiences this year were the same as paff – and I also had a great time. I usually hunt western MN in Pope County every weekend (plus some) for waterfowl. We have some great marsh/puddle duck spots and big water diver spots, but this year our group just did not see the numbers we are accustomed to. I only hunted 3 times (mornings only) in MN this year. I shot “0” birds. As a matter of fact, I never even fired a shell at a duck in MN this year. In 25 years, that’s a first for me!! I’ll admit, I did not work for them either though. I knew the birds were not there and I just did not want to make that great of an effort. In most cases, I just wanted to be “out with the dog.” ….I also went bowhunting instead.
I think Mother Nature had a lot to do with our problem this year though. Our weather just did not cooperate to push the birds together and through. Heck,… even deer hunting seemed sort-of screwed-up (swatting skeeters in late October?). Either way, in my humble opinion, I think this is a much larger problem. I think all the government regulators (in the US, Canada and Mexico) need to step up to the plate and resolve this issue “globally.” If one reads the posts/comments from waterfowl hunters from all over the continent, the waterfowl problems seem to be getting worse all around. Everyone is complaining in one way or another. The MN DNR can and should resolve its problem here, but all states/governments need to work better together – and for the birds – not for the politics or the money or for season lengths or daily bag limits – for the birds!! Whatever they are doing – or not doing – it’s just not good enough! They don’t need $$ or DU, or Delta or me or anyone else,…. they just need to do their job better – for the birds. Most ethical hunters already support private waterfowl organizaions in many ways. It’s the government regulators that need to start doing right. It’s not just the wildlife managers either. It starts with land planning/development, environmental/pollution problems, etc. It’s going to take a totally new mind-set in terms of wildlife conservation and human cohabitation,….. And it will take more than just “hunters” to fix the problem. OK,… I know I’m rambling…. so I’m DONE. Off my soap box.
On another note,…. I have “hundreds” and “hundres” of curley-tail mallards flying around my house this week. …..THEY’RE HERE !!!!!

SplitshotNovember 30, 2004 at 1:03 pm #4776The goose season is broken up into 4 different zones in the state of Mn. Why can’t we have at least 2 zones for Duck hunting.Duck hunters up North are always complaining that it opens to late and they get froze out.Southern Mn. I my 30 years of experience closes to early in the year.We need a North/South zone. Also the early SE goose hunt is a joke.Maybe if we could hunt over water I might have a chance at Silver Lake (In City limits) LOL.

December 16, 2004 at 2:43 pm #5037I agree and wish the late season would include the holiday too. My 13 y/o just got his first goose two nights ago after school. Would love to spend some more time doing that with him
