Our North Dakota Trip

My dad and I hunted Thursday through Sunday southwest of Pettiebone. On Thursday we limited out with nine greenheads, one hen mallard(accident), a pintail, and a blue bill. I made the mistake early in the morning and thought the hen was a greenhead, but that was the last one I shot for the rest of the trip. We were done by 9:30 a.m. and while we were picking up decoys the ducks were still landing around us. This was the best duck hunting day that I have seen in my entire life(14 years). From the moment that legal rolled around to the time we left there was never 5 minutes when there were not ducks in the air. Friday, it was a little wet and a lot slower than the day before. We hunted till dark and ended our day at 7 greenheads, one hen mallard(accident), 2 cans, and a widgeon. The hen was behind the drake and when we shot they both fell. We were being very selective in what we shot, but if we had wanted to shoot any ducks that came in the day would have been over a lot faster. there were a lot of bluebills, gadwalls, etc. The reason we shot the widgeon was because it had good color.
The picture is from Thursday but Friday it was to wet out to get out the digital.

By Saturday we had eaten 2 meals of ducks and still only needed 5 greenheads and 1 other duck. We got the greenheads and in the process had several flocks of geese come over. We managed to scratch 1 greater and 2 lessers.

Here is what we brought home. If you’re a duck hunter then North Dakota is the place to go. The people are friendly and they go out of their way to make you feel welcome. Also the sloughs are never very crowded, the most people we saw on this slough was 3 groups including us.

    Sounds like an awesome trip.

I love Widgeon, some of the coolest looking ducks IMO. I may have shot more.

    Were you hunting public land?

Looks like you guys had a great time. Boy….I need to get back out there. Any sandhills around the area? They are one of the toughest birds to kill. Good report rnkid

    Moss Boss,
    Yes we were.
    Buckmaster,
we saw a few sandhills and on the rain overcast days the cranes were flying pretty low from one feild to another.

    Buckmaster,
Since North Dakota split the Pheasant and waterfowl license you would have to get a pheasant license and crane stamp to shoot cranes. The lady explained that since cranes aren’t web footed you need the other license. Not worth another $100 to shoot a crane or two. The are a tough bird, we killed a few before the law changed.
