FINALLY!!!! A decent day of duck hunting
Still not very many birds in the area, but I was lucky enough to stumble upon a new little secret spot during one of my MANY scouting mission this week.
By 8:30am I had already shot my 2 woodies, along with 2 BIG OL GREENHEADS, when this fully colored out drake greenwing comes zippin into the dekes…..Now, the plan for the day was to shoot my 2 woodducks and then nothin but green , but when this duck came into the dekes, wings cupped, I just couldn’t pass up this rare opportunity at such a prime speciman . I have to check with my finacial advisor first, but I “think” I can scratch up enough $$$ for this bird to go on the wall (unless some smart kid, who shall remain nameless, wants to do it for free ).
After that I spent the next 2 1/2 hours ATTEMPTING to shoot my last Greenhead so I could go back home and go to bed, but by 11:00 I was still one short and only had one shell left, so I decided to pack it up . I shot way more than I should have had too, but then again, that’s why we’re out there…..to SHOOT!!! You can garuantee I won’t be caught short shelled again this year .
The best part of today was watchin the ducks work. No other hunters around to screw it up for me. I haven’t had ducks decoy like that since the Wis. opener. They must have really liked something about my spread (which consisted of 6 featherlite inflatable mallards, and 4 woodies ). I never touched my call once, they were either coming in, or they weren’t.
But anywho, like I said in the begining, duck numbers are still awfully low. VERY VERY VERY little shooting going on from the main marsh again. I’m sure most of the guys that were out there left scratching their heads agian
