Hey there…I’m new to this website.I live down in louisiana and our duck counts aren’t really that high this year neither.Hopefully things turn out better than they look.

It is sad and the hunting is showing it!! Going to need a lot of cold weather to push the birds into our area before the season closes.

Do you consider any puddlers “calendar ducks”, or just the cans and divers?
They’ll be here sooner or later, how long they stay I cannot say!

I would definatly say that there are some calendar mallards. It’s seems like every year, no matter what the weather, we get a good push of mallards down the river around the 3rd-4th week of October

Personally, I just think there is alot more local and Minnesota mallards that just move through with the earlier fronts, not so much based on time of year.
Cans, on the other hand, I think their migration is driven by day length. I know no scientific evidence of either, just observation.

Those Cans are absolutly incrediable. I know that on Onalaska you can go to bed on the 30th with 50,000 sitting in the refuge, and wake up the next morning and there will be 250,000……every year within a day or two, you can set your calendar by it .
Mallards are obviously not quite that calendar related, but I do believe that a bunch show up at the same general time every year no matter what the weather.
No scientific observation for that either, just what I’ve witnessed in all my years of huntin

As a rookie I only know what I have seen so far this year. Yesterday afternoon the numbers of ducks has definitely increased in the area. We saw lots of ducks flying and talked to quite a few guys at the landing with their limits. We didn’t get a lot of birds, but that happens when you get cut off by all the sky busters before they even get close or low enough . This morning starts a new day and I really like the early morning hunts anyway

I’ll bet there’s a ton of them years!!!
As for the northern push into northern WI, it just hasn’t happened yet, though last Thursday while muskie fishing we saw our first group of what looked to be northern birds. I have been hunting several times this year and haven’t seen a duck!!! Every thing else has been high and on its way to land yonder. I wonder if everything is three weeks behind like this last summer???

Well…..I was 4 the first time my dad took me out into the swamps, so that makes this my 15th year . Grant it, I didn’t start shootin until I was 10, but I’ve talked, read and seen enough duck hunting that I think I’ve got a pretty good grasp on the subject

I was out on Northern Pool 7 Sunday morning, and it was horrendous. I bet we saw maybe 20 puddlers all morning. Was a good number of high flying cans out though. Can hunting should be OK in the next week, but it seems we need alot more mallards to move in, at least on 7.
