I just returned from a Manitoba goose hunt. The weather up there has been very mild also. The crops are just starting to come out, they had a very wet/cool spring and summer also.We had 3 excellent days of goose shoots out of a 6 day hunt.Mostly local birds we had to scout hard to find. The ducks up there were almost non existant.I hate to burst your bubbles but this really isnt that far north (Winnipeg )area. So if the migration isnt happening there yet Im afraid it will take more than some cool weather here to stir them down.We need some damn cold weather up north to freeze everything up hard.Just my observations good luck to all fellow waterfowlers and try to be considerate of each other.

    Mat03z,

Sounds like a you had a good time up there anyways. When you are saying good hunts, you talking about limiting out, or just having birds work the decoys well? Any snows flying around? Think the bird population has been pretty poor everywhere from what I have gathered from others. Just shooting local ducks around my area still, but a lot of geese are moving and hopefully the ducks will come soon.

Think your observation is pretty darn good and I will be willing to second that.

We had 3 days when we limited out with 5 canada geese each and there were 4 of us hunting.20 geese in about 1/2 of hunting is great but we had to work hard to get them. We had to carry 7 dozen bigfoot decoys about 2 blocks into the field. Scouting was key to getting birds.Once shot at in a particular field they would not come back the next day. There were snow geese around we only got two but there were some flocks around. But if you’ve ever hunted snows you know how unpredictable they can be.And yes we did have a good time.

Your observations on Manitoba in the last week are very similar to the ones I had on the opener week up there (Sept 27). I’m heading up tonight for another week though. I am really hoping it gets cold! …..In anticipation, I’m even bringing the snow camo. I was wondering about the ag harvest. Virtually nothing was cut when I was there the first time. This time, it’s all about white geese for us, so we really need the fields down. Usually, when set up right, we do very well on mallards too. We’ve got 20 doz. shells and 500 socks and I can tell you this,…. I’m NOT carrying them in 2 blocks into a field (been there – done that). Maybe this will finally be the week of some good northern migration though. I’ll give a report once back in the USA.
