As reelguy stated in the bass forum…..WOW, what a day!!!
A buddy and I hunted the MN side of the river Saturday morning. We were thinking it would be a great morning with lots of new birds coming in on that big cold front that came through the night before. We also thought having more guys in the swamp to move the birds a little would be a plus. Well…….WE WERE WRONG!!! The sky was parctically VOID of birds. We didn’t even HEAR our first shot until 10 mins after legal time . it was pathetic. we did see a few small flocks flying high and headed south, but nothing flying around the actual swamp………BUT…….at 7:15am a lone drake woodie comes zippin in from who knows where, right into the dekes……one shot, one kill……and look what I find when I pick him up …..that’s right…… JAKE’S A BAND VIRGIN NO LONGER!!!!
Let me tell you, that sure made that hunt worth it in a hurry!!!
We didn’t see another bird for the next 45 mins, so we picked up and headed for Wisconsin.
Now being that it was opener and most guys had been in their spots well before dark (if not sleeping out there all night) we didn’t expect to get any of the “prime” spots. But my buddy being from the area, had a little out of the way secret spot in mind (I’m still not too optimistic at this point). But when we pull into this spot and there are already 100 geese and 40+ mallards sittin on it, I’m much happier.
Anywho, too make a long story short, we ended our Wiscosin hunt with 4 greenheads, 4 woodies, and 1 bluewing . We also had a goose lying dead in the water that got up and flew away as my buddy went to grab it . The action wasn’t fast and furious by any means, but it was steady all afternoon long. A duck here, a duck there sort of thing. Still pretty darn good considering. The mallards decoyed great (no spinner). If we were shootin suzzies we would have limited out no problem (but dead hens don’t lay eggs ).
Wish everyday could be that freaking awesome!!!
