I don’t know why, but there are definatly a lot of geese pushin south these last few days. I’ve been hearing em fly over durning the night and well into the morning hours (like 2-3am). Not sure if it has something to do with the full moon or what, but they’ve definatly started movin down.

It now looks as if Thursday’s gonna be a goose shoot instead of a woodie shoot

I’ve been seeing them too in the SE part of the Twin Cities. Saturday evening I saw the first flock of migrant Canadas. I don’t know what their proper name is but I call them Squeaker geese because they make a squeaking call rather than the honk of the gaints. Their flocks are more of an arc or semi-circle shape rather than the V of the local gaints. I think maybe they are called the Lesser subspecies. They not nearly as big as the gaints.

Been hearing the same thing in Eagan. Very distinctive difference in sound. I appreciate the info – I didn’t know those were migrants. Are those ‘lessers’ ?

Yeah, I would assume they are lessers, but without seeing them it is hard to tell. Lessers make more of a squeaking sound than a honk and are about the size of a northern mallard. Best way to tell would be the size of the goose. Been seeing more geese in my area as well. Let the fun begin.

Could be the Richardson or the Cackling Canadian goose. Both these 2 are a little smaller than a lesser. Only difference would be the Cackling is alot darker in color.

I’ve seen a few, as they fly right over my house all day long (Too bad I’m in the concrete Jungle). My vote is lesser; I’ve seen the Cacklers, and they are way too small. These geese, to a limited extent, almost sound like a snow goose.

The geese I’m referring to are a lot bigger than a mallard but a lot small than a gaint. I guess they’re about the size of a snow goose. Also, the necks are noticeably shorter in comparison to the overall body size than that of the gaints. In a few weeks when more of them move down into the Twin Cities area, it won’t be unusual to see some of these geese mixed in with the gaints. They are easy to pick out when flying like this.

Well, was out last night for the night flight and boy are the birds on the move. Haven’t been seeing a lot, but enough to keep a guy interested. Well, last night I bet I saw close to 400-500 geese when Sunday I bet I only saw 100. Cool temps, really have the birds moving.

Could be EPP, but they are a much darker color like the cackler.
