First off you have to be real careful if you are not used to driving these types of motors. They will in fact throw you around if you aren’t hanging on. The 31 hp go-devil is a night and day difference than the 23. Way more power. About the turning around thing. The whole object of a mud motor is to get in and out of shallow areas without getting out to push. I hate standing in knee deep mud trying to swing a boat around and then jumping in and not being able to get out. Trust me I have done this many times. I am just curious as to what situations some of you have been in with your pro-drives and how they have responded.

Pro-drives will turn you like an outboard would in any amount of water……never been in a go-devil, but I was under the impression that because of the long shaft, they can’t make sharp turns . Last night we stopped and started in just a few inches of water and thick weeds with no problem at all. However, we did have to get out and push through a shallow sandy area…..for some reason the pro-drives don’t go through sand well ? Not sure what the go-devils do with sand?

p.s. don’t get me started on “airboats”

Like I said before I don’t want to start a war either…just like to get my 2 cents in there sometimes ya know.

I know the 23 Briggs (don’t make for go-devil anymore) goes somewhere around 18 mph they say. How true is this??? I have no idea. Pro-drive…they say there 27 Kohler, which I am assuming is the same motor as they make for go-devil since Go-devil has Kohler motors on them to will go 24-25 mph. Speed is all in the boat I say. I have a 18′-0″ extra wide flat..flat bottom and have raced 16′ with the same motor and just killed them. With go-devil you need to spread the weight out as much as possible so you can get back in those tough to reach places with little to no water in them. Now, not sure how it works with the pro-drives, but the ones I have raced they only had them on 14’and 16′ boats and they were pushing water big time. I would say the same would be for the pro-drive as go-devil. Don’t go with anything but a flat…flat bottom cause it will just stop you from going in shallow water.

For turning….it comes with experience I think. At first it is a chore to try and figure it out, but once you have the hang of it….not a problem at all.

Oh..almost forgot the most important part. Driving 20 mph and hit something in the dark with go-devil?? Yeah, you go for a fall, but if you hit something in the dark with an outboard do you jerk forward or fall foward at all?? They do make handles to hang onto for the go devil, but I think they just get in the way so I free fall.

Yet to find a motor/boat that will go thru sand. I have been hung up on sandbars plenty of times. Atleast when you have to get out here you aren’t up to your b$ll’s in mud.

Ok….I’ll give ya the speed thing. Pro-drives definatly aren’t gonna win ya any races. But I’m not sure they really need to . If you think you’re gonna get beat to a spot, just get up earlier and get it. In the spectrum of life, what’s one less hour of sleep anyway .

watch the Pro-Drive in Action video and tell me that a pro-drive can’t do anything a go-devil can.

If you were in shallow water, couldn’t you just step out and turn the boat around?

Not if you are going where other people can’t go. If there is 1″ of water and 2′ of mud the last thing I want to do is bail out of the boat and spin it around. Like I said, leverage is key!

I guess I am used to walking in to my spots and busting hump through mud, so I never really thought about that. I suppose if I sepnt the money on one of these, I wouldn’t want to get out either.

PS, I ain’t pro pro-drive or go-devil, just trying to get the facts.

Moss, I hear ya man, not trying to argue. When I had my outboard I got used to getting out and pulling the boat, at least 75-100yards each outing. When I was younger (not that I amn’t young now) wait, let me start over. When I was in shape, it didn’t bother me to trudge thru the muck, now I am older and wiser and well a little fatter I rather just watch the young guys bail out and spin their boat around. So you’re absolutely right, not having to get out of the boat is why I spent the money! BM you’re right, I have mine on a 18′ flat, displace the water/weight is another key. I think mine goes about 18 on the GPS. My buddy has the 31 briggs, goes about the same speed as mine with 1 person in each boat no gear….but w/3 guys, dogs and gear his will blow by me, diffinetly has the power over mine.

Jake..your right on with that. What does another hour of sleep do for a guy anyways.. People die in bed right!!! I just tend to have a few to many sassies once in awhile or even over sleep for that matter. You know what I am saying anyways….but there is always that time when someone else wakes up that hour early and you are standing at the landing face to face.

I know the Pro-Drive will do the exact same thing as the go-devil….never once mentioned that, but like I stated in my pervious post….SPEED can sometimes be a guys final option and the pro-drive just doesn’t have it.

From the looks of it the Pro-Drive is a lot faster than the other mud motors. Am I wrong? I don’t recall hardly ever seeing a mud motor up on plane before.
