Well, it’s almost here now. 3 days and counting until my favorite day of the entire year !!! I’m so pumped I can’t hardly stand it. I’ve done the scoutin…..I’ve practice my shootin and my callin…..I got my gear packed and ready weeks ago…… I’M READY TO DO SOME HUNTIN!!!

But anywho, Here are my goals for this year…..

-hunt at least 30 of the 60 days (not including late goose season). Not sure if I’ll quite make it, with deer hunting taking up a whole week, along with a couple pheasant hunting weekends planned…..But I’m gonna try my darndest

-Pop my band cherry …..obviously not something I can control, just gotta get lucky. But the more I hunt, the better the chance of gettin me some “BLING” .

-Do a better job practicing selective harvest/self control. Last year I shot a couple ducks over thick cattails that I never found…..there’s no worse feeling than that. I also plan on passing on ALL hens. Just a personal decsion….plus the fact that I’m gonna have more than enough meat (hopefully)

-Shoot a triple….never done it before and I’m not that great of a shot, but you never no .

-Don’t fall in while trying to retrieve a duck……always seems to happen at least once a year. And it’s NEVER fun .

-Shoot a big bull Canvasback or a mature Pintail for the wall. Have never shot either in MN before, but have never actually hunted divers before. I definatly plan on doin a few diver hunts out on the big water in November

So what are your guy’s goals for the upcoming season?

I would like more bands and a nice mounter for the wall too, but that is just an extra and don’t really plan on it, although I already got one band in the early goose so my season is a success ,but 1)Have Fun 2)Be safe and 3) Have a few after every hunt

See the light in my son’s eyes get a little brighter. He absolutely loves hunting ducks and geese. He is only 8 but is a die hard already. If I can look over at him and see myself when I was 8…well…my goal will be met.

Last year was my first season of duck hunting and I basically just sat back and let the other guys manage the spread and calling, and started blasting when it was time. SO, my goals for this year are pretty simple, starting with calling in my own birds and not whiffing quite so much Also I’d like to get my little brother hooked on the sport (although if he’s like me he’ll be addicted the first time he sees a duck set its wings)
I’ve put a lot into getting equipment ready for the year and I can’t wait!!!

Jewelery is always a plus and a big one at that. I have a few goals myself.
    1. Don’t miss a bird!! Not a good shot, but I think I can do it.
    2. Kill atleast 4 birds everytime I go out. Should be very possible if my scouting continues strong.
    3. Get myself 2 bands for the season.
    4. Like Waterswat said “sassies after every hunt.” Atleast a 6 box anyways.
    5. Stay safe and keep my gun in tip top shape.

Good luck to all and boy am I ready

    Buckmaster,
Let me know how you do on that #1 when that first flock of teal about takes your head off and 3 empties are laying on the ground. That would be an awesome goal to accomplish but I don’t even think Tom Knapp could accomplish that. But might as well set your goals high or else don’t set any at all. Heres to a great season boys

Your right Waterswat, I shouldn’t of took it to that extent I guess. Well, atleast not for early in the season. Now when the big mallys come down, that is when I will not miss a beat man. Teal……..I might miss a few. Like you said set the goals high or don’t set any at all. If I can follow my goal I should have enough shells to last me a life time anyways. Then again….you don’t get a prize for taking shells home with ya at the end of the day either.

    is right man!!!!

My thought is, if it’s worth one it’s worth all three! So BM I would expect you are only going to be taking 6 shells out to “not miss”. My Goal:
I’d just like to beat my 99′ record of 31 drake mallards. Boy I love killin’ those greenheads, but I don’t think this is the year with numbers lower than normal. Guess we won’t know until mid-season if I am on pace or not.

My goal is to just enjoy myself and forget the “real world” while I am out. Getting too caught up in numbers and all that crap just stresses me out. Heck, we hunt with 7 guys opening day and I can’t keep track of numbers, so why try?? A couple of years ago I quit worrying about it, and suddenly 2 duck days were almost as fun as 6 duck days.

Another goal is to not have to deal with some a-hole over spots or being to close or shooting at ducks coming into someone else’s spread, or any of that crap. Hard to do on the river, but mission accomplished last year!

Don’t shoot any decoys while waterswatting cripples.

Help my dog have an enjoyable fall.

    Goals for the season:
Watch the sun come up over the marsh as many days as I can.
Spend as many of those days as possible with my son by my side.
Kill a duck once in a while.
Enjoy a cup of coffee after the dekes are put out but before legal—the smell of that coffee and swamp is so wonderful.
Thank GOd every day for allowing me to experience it.

    That is very true!!!!!!!!!!!!
I hope to get out and atleast have my dog retrieve her first ducks. She has retrieved geese at 8 months, but we will see how she does with ducks. WIll make it an easy year with a dog. Going for some bling bling myself and having a safe hunt everytime.

Pitbull, I know what you’re saying. I use to live to kill ducks but as I put more and more openers under my belt my values changed and I imagine yours will to. There is nothing wrong with blasting ducks, I got a triple on Teal Saturday and I was a happy old fart. Out west it was a slow opener, we limited out on Sat. but Sunday it was almost dead and we could only scratch out 5 ducks by noon when we had to head back. Good luck to all.
