Early Goose Blues…..

AM, I don’t think these guys are trying to call you an idiot. I too have been hunting the Mississippi 45 minutes above LAX, for the last 20 years, and have never seen a flock of snows around. We shot a Blue last year, and every few years we see a snow with a flock of Canadas, but to see a whole flock of snows is something very odd for the area. So you can understand all the questions. That, and I bet I’m not the only hunter that has been told where a whole bunch of snow geese are, only to find out they are swans or pelicans.

nubbinbuckPosts: 922September 7, 2004 at 12:47 pm #3215I started hunting pool 9 a few years ago. I’ve seen 1 Snow. The old timers said they used to see Snows all the time b/4 the migration shifted west. I remember one morning, we watched the Pelicans coming off the refuge. Thousands upon thousands were flying over our blind. kind of cool.

September 7, 2004 at 2:50 pm #3217I have hunted the river for 31 years and have seen very few snows flying the river. I live about 50 miles west off the river and back in the 70s snows were a fairly common sight in this area. But I have only seen about 20 since sometime in the late 80s or early 90s. All 20 were seen last season.

September 9, 2004 at 7:03 pm #3254There have been a ton of local pelicans here in Hastings this year! Not usually the case! I would be AMAZED if they were snows! Maybe peilicans or swans.

TuckSeptember 9, 2004 at 7:31 pm #3256We used to hunt right by Lytles and we saw a flock of snows every so often. Even got a 50-60 yard shot at some once and blew it. Never saw themn this early, but then again, never really spent alot of time out there this early either.
I doubt anyone would mistake a snow and a pelican, especially if they are low. A swan perhaps, but wings are different (no black).

September 9, 2004 at 8:07 pm #3259Since you said they were honking I’m thinking they may have been Cacklers(Lesser Canada Geese). I can see a person mistaking theese birds for each other from a long distance.
We have tons of pelicans down here in B.C. right now too.
