Early Goose Blues…..

I don’t know about you guys, but I’m finding this early goose thing is absolutely Ridiculous

A buddy and I went out and did a little scoutin tonight. After a bit of searching, we did find a flock of 200-300 sittin in a picked sweet corn field. My buddy knew the farmer so we went to get permission for the wed opener. Well, it turns out since the geese started showing up to this field last Thursday they’ve talked to (and given permission to) close to 50 GUYS !!! This field ain’t that big, maybe 40-50 acres. Can you imagine the chaos of that many guys trying to get into this one flock of geese is going to be ? Even if only 20 show up, it’s still going to be a who’s willing to blast the furthest contest. Needless to say, we’ve decided to skip the early goose season this year . I simply have no desire to compete with the number of whackos that are all going to be going after the same flock of geese.

Any of you guys gonna try to hunt the early season?

    Jake,
Just read a post from a week or so ago. Guy up in Northern N. Dakota saw a few Snows. Earliest he has ever seen them. Cool summer must be doing something funky…

I don’t hunt geese here in the Midwest, but this morning at work a whole bunch of whites flew overhead. I could see the whites of their eyes, so they were definitely in shooting range , but the were headed into the reserve .

Jake,I hear you dude.Always crazy on any Iowa opener around NW IA.Pheasant, deer, geese, ducks, walleye openers,it can bring alot of the “dumb” ones out of the woodwork.
I’ll be on the water during the opener but for walleyes, not geese.

    Hey Jake,
I feel your pain! Down here in Iowa we tried getting something set up for the Sept.1st Cedar Rapids hunt, but the zone is relatively small. The geese are obviously using pastures now and farmers got cattle in every one of them, so access is very limited. By the time we got permission for a field, there were already people lined up to hunt it. Needless to say we didn’t go. Can’t wait till all of the other seasons open so people are busy hunting something else. Hope things get better for ya this season!!!

It’s certainly too early in the season to get the blues about hunting as it just started in WI two days ago. All that I can say is don’t be afraid to ask permission and don’t be afraid to drive. I’ve had days where I’ll go thru a half a tank of gas to end up with…yep that’s right…nothing. On the otherhand, it’s a good way to get out and explore spots of where to go and where not to go! I’ve been finding a lot of geese feeding in wheat fields so that’s a good place to start. Sod farms and sweet corn patches (cause they are cut) are also good in the early season. Good luck….Cut ’em

AM-whites, do you mean snows….in Wisconsin?

Yeah, snows. That is what I meant to say, but must have got ahead of myself when typing . They were between Holmen and Trempeleau, WI. Seen another good sized flock this morning again. Sure wish I knew somebody who hunted geese around here. I love hunting geese, but haven’t done it since I moved from Colorado to here .

Holy cow snows around here this early in the season is unheard of. I have only seen 1 flock of snows since I have been hunting on the river the last 16 yrs. Sure they weren’t pelicans.

…waterswat, I was about to ask that same thing, but I didn’t want to insult AM. Not insulting you AM… but I too have been hunting the flyway for close to 15 years, and I think I have only seen 2 or 3 flocks of snows. All really late in the year.

The snows should start heading back down south hear before to long I would think, so it might not be that hard to believe. Just hard to picture one flock of snows in WI, let alone 2 in 2 days. AM, could it have been the white crust in the corners of your eyes???? Just kiddings. Keep up the reports peeps.

Ummmm….definitely not pelicans. If you are from Onalaska then you should know where Lytle’s Landing is. We just put in a new canoe/small boat landing as well as a nice sidewalk down to the water. Go down there in the early morning and you will more than likely see them flying overhead. They were very low and very close. I am pretty positive geese honk and fly in the infamous V pattern. Pelicans are much bigger, do not fly in a V, and they definitely do not honk .
