had one helluva time out in good ol South Dakota last week. BY FAR the best spring break i’ve had in almost a year

the snows are definatly in major migration mode now as we literally saw bajillions of them in the 4 days we were there. ended up with 26 snows and blues for our efforts.

let me know if anyone wants specific locations……otherwise here are some pics of our success

NO ONE SHALL EVER MAKE FUN OF MY COW EVER AGAIN!!!

…..as the one and only time we used it, it worked absoloutly perfect…….we found 5 snows and 3 specklebellies feeding in a feild……so we went and broke out the cow and slowly started walking towards them…….as we got closer they just kept feeding away from us…….so we started picking up the pace a bit and got to within 30-35yds before they stopped and all looked up at us…..we then threw the cow aside and were able to blast 2 of the snows.

not sure what they thought this big ugly thing that was well over 7ft tall and had six legs was , but they didn’t spook

we were never able to find another situation to use the cow, but just having it work ONCE made the trip

Sounds like a great hunt Jake. The “cow” decoy is great!! ….Just make sure you don’t add batteries. A spinning cow tail might tempt the DNR to come down on you – if you know what I mean. All kidding aside, I’ve got to give you credit for the attempt. If it works on Antelope, why not geese?
Great pics too!! ….Gets my blood going just to hear about it. …….Good Hunting.

    Jake,

Where were you hunting/staying?? I miss my spring jaunts of sneaking and crawling up on thousands of geese. The only way to hunt those darn things was spot and stalk. Great pic!!!

we stayed in DeSmet and hunted around lake thompson/lake preston…..mainly north, but there were geese everywhere, so it didn’t really matter where we went. it seemed the closer to the lakes we got the more hunters we saw……just get a few miles away and we had em all to our selves .

another thing i don’t think i mentioned was the hospitalities of the land owners out there. we only got turned down ONCE, and that was because the guy leased it out and didn’t think he should let us.

there was one section the geese were using BIG TIME. we talked to the farmer a couple different days. he was so nice he invited us back for dinner one night, although we delightfully declined……..then the next day we talked to him and he invited us back out in the fall to go pheasant hunting with him on his 1200 acres of land. from what i hear that’s un-heard of…..just an incrediably nice guy, wish i was going to be able to make that fall hunt

Great to hear those things Jake. I mainly hunted north of there, Clark area was always the best for me, but like you said, geese everywhere this time of year. I found getting permission to hunt waterfowl was easiest thing out there. Not many hunters, fall or spring. My first spring up in Watertown, I asked to hunt 16 places, got on 15. The locals typically answered with an emphatic, “kill all those ^#*&^#) geese you can. They are very hard on my wheat crops.” I was of course more than willing to oblidge.

Thanks for sharing the pics and stories!!!

Jake was wondering what you made your cow out of, thinking about making one, I’m up at NDSU in Fargo so I got a couple weekends of goose killing up here, havent gotten out yet. Did you use it any other times? Let me know thanks

hey Duckiller, welcome to the site

i’m not sure exactly what it’s called, but it’s kind of a mixture of plywood and cardboard……maybe it’s called plyboard or something . it ain’t very thick, but it still gets pretty heavy after a few hunderd yards.

sounds like you should be getting into the geese pretty soon up there. i got a buddy that goes to NDSU and i think he said he was startin to see a few around. GOOD LUCK, and let us know how you do

Went out yesterday for most of the day and saw huge numbers of birds between VC and Jamestown, me and a buddy got 5. Will probably head south next time, it’s too flat to try and sneak them up that way. Tons of birds around though. Pretty fun.

Proof is in the pudding, but that ‘creature’ looks more like a black bear than a cow (he he)
