With the highs in the 50’s and even 60’s in the cities this week, how much ice do you think we’re going to lose? This will be my first year trying for late ice and I’m curious to see how this weather will affect the ice thickness.

I thinking not much. All of the snow has to melt off first.

Well, there really wasn’t much snow to begin with and most of the small lakes/ponds I’ve seen have already lost all of their snow.

You really need to watch where small creeks and rivers come in. Thats warmer water coming in and erodes the ice pretty quick.

Remember, no ice is safe ice.

In high school when we couldn’t reach with a board we would use a small boat to get to the ice sheet. Probably not the smartest…

The ice is > 20″ thick in central NY on Conesus. Then it has 1.5′ of hard packed snow on top of it. 1 week will just get the snow mushy. Besides we are only going to see temps in the 40’s at the most.

Don’t forget your creepers. Once the snow is gone and the ice is covered with water one slip and you’ll be soaked. Dressing in layers is as important as ever. Saturday I started in 3 sweatshirts and ended in 1. Snow pants with long undies were way too warm. Sure felt great to be out.

There are several factors that will effect how long we will have fishable ice. The 2 main factors are Wind and rain. If there is little or no wind the warm air over the ice gets cooled by the ice itself. The ice will melt rather slowly. If we get warm temps and wind, it will keep a new source of warm air over the ice all the time and cause it to melt much faster. Rain also helps melt the ice much faster. My guess is we will have 2 more weeks of fishable ice here in the Metro. Then again I’ve said that before and the ice was unfishable in 3 days. And also times were we were still fishing almost a month later. You better get out there a lot this next week. Ice out fishing is by far usually the best fishing of the year. Good luck and be safe.
