War on Wasps

The annual war on wasps has begun. Last year really sucked until I found out where they were trying to build their nests. I was able to knock them down and it really helped. They were building their nests under the eaves on my gazebo and they love to sun themselves on my deck.

Is there anything reliable at keeping them away? Does anyone have any tried and true tactics?

We’re going to try peppermint oil. Hopefully it works.

My daughter was telling me that you can take a brown paper bag and hang that up. It looks like a wasp’s nest, and wasps will avoid an area with an existing nest so they leave. You can find numerous examples of this on Google.

    I haven’t tried this myself.

were just discussing this last night… evidently a product called Tempo, sprayed around a house will keep wasps, asian beetles and even flies at bay. gonna try it at the cabin next weekend… pretty sure I won’t be in the boat… doah

Fleet farm has wasp traps I use. Pour some hummingbird juice in them. They work good. The good Bee’s don’t touch them.

    I use trapstik.

I’ll be using them again this year. Only thing I don’t like about them is that EVERYthing sticks to them. Bees, hornets, birds, bats and walleyes.

I might try that, but based on the number of wasps stuck to yours, mine would fill up in an hour.

Actually the pictured trapstik was sent to me as a sample from the company that makes them. I hung the trap 1 day after I saw my first wasp this spring. The photo is two days later. The trap is now stuffed full. I only took that photo to send to trapstik company as they requested feedback.
The new design has plastic grates that are used to keep birds from being stuck. I only get wasps so I don’t use the plastic grates as this gives me more surface area for bugs.

Putting The trap out at the first sign of wasps seems to have reduced the number around two weeks later, but time will tell. I was hoping the late winter would’ve helped curb the wasps but it sure didn’t. I’ll go through many traps this year, house sprays and cans of sprays.

I want to report back about the peppermint oil.

It worked for an hour or two, then they started landing where I applied it. Didn’t matter if I applied it as a concentrate or if it was diluted in water.

How close are you guys putting the Trapstiks to typical nesting areas? Or can you just put them up anywhere with good results. Had so many last year, I’m looking forward to trying something new……

I’m sick of hunting them. I feel like a sniper sitting on my deck.
