Found time in between panfish trips to make a run to Rainy for a day of walleye/pike fishing with past clients and had a great time. We didn’t slam fish all day by any means but a solid 26 and a 1/2 made for a nice pic…despite Pat’s “unique” hold…kidding Pat! It is a nice pic. We had a number of under 18’s that made it home for a fish fry too. Pat also lost one that may have been a pretty special fish. Much heavier then the 26 he said…classic case of the one that got away. I was right there and never got a look at her. Rainy Lake certainly has some giants! No huge pike on the day but a couple perfect sized fish made their way home as well. All in all just a fun day on the ice. Thanks Seth and Pat. I will see you guys again in April. Remember walleye season on Rainy Lake stays open until April 14. Pike seasons are continuous.
Snow conditions on Rainy Lake have stopped any real truck traffic. We drove the truck, but wished we had not. We did not have any issues with slush but our travels were limited. The Park road is open and plowed east to Cranberry Bay and it also branches North around Dryweed Island. Plenty of spots to try near the road. Rainy Lake really lends itself to the more “portable” type of adventure however. Take your snow machine and your portable house and go explore this multi species paradise. On a lot of days you won’t even see another group of anglers. Try 30 to 45 feet for your walleyes.
