FLW League question?

I am going to fish all 3 events this year.

I was wondering on prefishing, lets say you go out and prefish with someone who is not fishing in the tourney and find a hot spot or technique, can you share that with a boater?

I assume if you prefish with someone fishing the tourney it would be bad to share that info if paired with another boater?

You can not say a thing on where, lure or anything I remeber at the 2 day last year so would assume the same for pre fishing..your with the boater he goes where he wants to go so enjoy the ride and fish where he goes is pretty much how it is summed up

There are no formal rules against sharing your pre-fishing spots with another boater, but it’s in VERY poor taste. When I have pre-fished with a boater, I hop in the boat and let them know on the onset any information I gather I will keep to myself.

The PWT allows zero input from co-anglers. Actually, they call them amateurs. The FLW doesn’t have any rules against a Co providing information, but it’s still in good practice to yield to the direction of the boater.

    Tourney talk gets me going.

    Hey Moreeyes,
I have been fishing the league on the boater side for 3 years and fished a couple years as a co-angler on the tour.

In the 1 day events you are allowed to share any info you have. If you are prefishing on your own or with some one not in the tournament you can share any and all info with your boater for the day.
I would say if you prefish with another boater you might want to keep that info to yourself even though there are no rules about it but it would be a courtesy to the boater you prefished with. You can ask the boater, there might be some info he/she won’t care if you share.

The information sharing rules are in place for multi day tournaments…..you absolutely can NOT share info from day 1 with your day 2 boater, even if it is your info, if you prefish and you tell your day 1 boater what you have for info you are not supposed to share that with your day 2 and beyond boaters.

Best bet is to put yourself in the boaters shoes….if you wouldn’t want someone sharing info with a competing boater the best bet is to keep it to yourself.

Buckshot is correct. I asked Sonny myself about the rule. It is as John has stated unless something new has comeup. When you get to the registration be sure to ask Kevin or Sonny for the current correct answer. Most of the time the boater will stick to there gameplan unless they have nothing going on. This is kinda funny though, one time when I was a co-angler I drew a guy who had nothing going and he asked me if I new where to find the fish. I new I was in trouble. The next day he was 45 min late to meet me at the access and was hung over besides. In the middle of the day he was sweating really bad(whiskey). I ended up taking control over his Ranger as he was keeling over and tryed to salvage the day. I new he broke every rule in the book but it really pushed me to enter as a boater from their on out. That was my worst experince ever fishing a Tournament. I hope that never happens to anyone.

It was at Leech Lake 4 year’s ago. I should have ended the day right away in the morning when he showed up late and opened the door of his truck and a full can of beer came rolling out and he looked at me and said “I cant let this go too waiste” and drank it. It sounds funny but I was steaming all day. If this happens to you co-angler’s out their turn the drunks in before you start the tournament in the mourning and save yourself from going through the long day. I hope all boater’s will use their commonsense and give their co-angler the best time on the water they have to offer. Most importantly a safe day of fishing. Leave the celabrating for after the Event.

I second that nothing wrong with having fun with the guys the night before but being ready in the morning is a must if were spending that much money..I personally have had GREAT boaters myself and ahve not heard anything negative before but like anywhere there is always a sour apple too. Overall though I think the FLW is run real well and is a great time and a wonderul learning curve for weekend guys trying to tune up different presentations like myself. Riggin is something I have never done a ton of growing up fishing the river but man last year I was lucky enough to be paired with Al shultz at Cass Lake and wow is all I can say that guy taught me more on rigging in one day than I learned on my own in 20 years!! a first class gentlemen and a man with skills!

Well said guys. That goes the other way as well. Co’s should make sure they show up with their reflexes, reaction time, etc. at 100%, not dulled from the night before. It is also important to be honest with your boater about your skills and comfort level. This helps the boater make important decisions about things like who nets/fights the fish and even may dictate equipment used.

I have been lucky and have drawn good partners for the three years that I have fished the FLW except for maybe one guy by the name of Lenny
But I have heard of a few horror stories, last year at Escanaba there was a boater with his first boat ever and first year in the FLW that went wide open full throttle never backed off at all both days out to his fishing spots and back. I know this for a fact because I talked to his second day co after the tournament, he said it was a ride from HELL If anyone knows who this clown is please send me his name in a PM.

I’ve had a couple of boaters who were not necessarily the best of boat handlers….one of which was very open with his lack of experience and was up for any suggestions or advice….the other, well…..I left my fingerprints in his dash and underseat…..very scary. The same can go for fishing knowledge as well….However, I must say, that I have yet to meet an for a person. All have been very friendly and have continued to be friendly many tournies later.

I think that is between you and the guy that took you out fishing. I know if I took a guy out I wouldn’t be happy if he yapped to others about my hot bite.

You are killing me Hunter . You are right I did have nothing going on Cass that year. At least I was honest and admitted it . I could have said man today we are going to kill em . We were lucky too catch the ones we did . If you havent figured it out yet Hunter is talking about me . That was a tough tournament. Just ask Todd Leider and Mike W. on having too sit out in the boat with me prefishing and listen too me wine because I could not get the fish too bite . Paitence and gut feeling got me and Hunter a check that day.

You know I’m kidding. I was very lucky to get to fish with the eventual MN league champion that year.
