Jerry Boardman from DeSoto and Gary Schreiner from Rock Falls, IL easily
captured the I.O.W.A. Walleye Tournament Trail opener on the Mississippi
River at Prairie du Chien on Sunday, April 23.
Their combined six-fish limit weight of 25.67 pounds more than doubled
the weight of the second place team and garnered them the $1500 first place
check. They also took home the Cabela’s Big Fish award of a $100
certificate for their 4.67-pound walleye.
“The winners really put on quite a show,” said I.O.W.A. Executive
Director Dean Higgins. “What a basket of fish!”
Second place and a check for $740 went to the team of Terry Green from
Mason City and Steve Templeton from Clear Lake with a six-fish limit weight
of 12.31 pounds.
Denny Miller from Fairfax and Rodger Clark from Albert Lea, MN took
third place and a check for $610 with their six-fish limit weight of 12.01
pounds.
The Clear Lake duo of Randy Mumm and Jason Voights cashed the fourth
place check of $560 with a weight of 11.63 pounds.
Chris Scholl from Manley and Kevin Hulsing from Cedar Rapids brought
home both the $510 for taking fifth place and also the Algona Marine and
Sport Contingency Bonus of a 30 percent matching bonus. Their bonus totaled
$153. This is awarded for any team placing in the money that is the original
owner of a 1998 or newer boat purchased from Algona Marine & Sport.
The Berkley Family Team Award of a pair of rod and reel combos valued at
$100 each went to the team of Roger and Jack Akridge from Graettinger for
their 12th place finish.
The Towtector Shield award of two $75 certificates for the team that
finishes just out of the money went to the team of Terry Mitchell from
Woodward and Adam Claussen from Long Grove for their 8th place finish.
The Stow Master Award of $200 to the highest placing team using a Stow
Master net went to the team of Jon Coolican from Mason City and Jim Coolican
Commerce Twp, MI for their 21st place finish.
The Need Mack’s Lure Award of $200 went to David Lampe from Britt and
David Cockrell from Forest City.
With river levels high, most of the teams locked up and headed to the
Victory area. “It was definitely a long run,” noted Higgins. “We had three
teams who ran out of gas!”
For Boardman and Schreiner their run turned into a “victory run” as they
fished the drops and breaklines, going from point to point. Constantly on
the move, the winners would cast their 5/8-ounce purple hair jigs a few
casts, and if they had no strikes, they would move on. They were on big fish
and caught fish off and on throughout the day.
Green and Templeton locked-up, too, and weighed a limit of fish by pole
lining purple Rapalas. Their catch was scattered throughout the day.
Miller and Clark headed toward Victory and spent their time hand-lining
Reef Runners. The story for them, however, was the 11+ pounder they caught
on Saturday during pre-fishing. “I know that fish was on their mind all
day,” said Higgins.
Next up on the I.O.W.A. circuit will be the Clear Lake Qualifier on
Sunday, May 14. “This was a great way to start the season. We had great
weather, the wind was not a factor and the teams were on good fish. I look
for a second great qualifier at Clear Lake. It is a premier walleye fishery
in the state,” added Higgins.
