GNWC Heads to Ohio’s Indian Lake

    By Steve Weisman
    GNWC Publicity Director
It’s been six weeks since the first tournament, so there’s a lot of
anticipation as the teams on the Ohio Region of the Grand National Walleye
Cup (GNWC) prepare for the upcoming Indian Lake Tournament on Sunday, May
    22.
“Weather has played a large part in the delay. I know the teams on the
Ohio Region are anxious to get going again. Indian Lake has been producing
good fish, and I think having our tournament this time of year will make it
a great tournament,” said GNWC Executive Director Bernie Barringer.
As a fishing lake, Indian Lake’s water clarity has vastly improved over
the past few years because of the Indian Lake Watershed Project. Tim
Harshbarger, owner of the Lakeside Pro Bass bait shop, believes this program
has really helped the fishing. Sediment being delivered into the lake has
been decreased by over 80 percent, and as a result, cleaner water has
allowed the growth of desirable plant vegetation for both fish and other
    aquatic habitat.
“We’ve had excellent fishing all spring. The fishermen have been using
all kinds of different presentations,” noted Harshbarger. “I look for good
weights as long a pressure system doesn’t come in and slow things down.”
The tournament director will have the trailer at the Lakeview Ramp from 6-8
p.m. the evening before the tournament to take late entries and answer
    questions. Take-off is at 7 a.m. with the weigh-in commencing at 3 p.m.
    sharp at the Lakeview Ramp.
“I really encourage the public to come out and witness the weigh-in.
They are free to the public, fun and educational. We will also have a couple
of Aqua-Vu underwater cameras set up in our release tanks so that the public
can see how they work. The weigh-in is a great place to find out from the
teams what presentations and tactics worked to trigger the fish,” added
    Barringer.
For those interested in entering, the entry fee remains at $210 per
team for each tournament. Openings do still exist for the Indian Lake
qualifier, and Barringer encourages interested anglers to contact him at
1-800-890-FISH (3474), or email the GNWC at [email protected]. “I also
encourage people to check out our website at http://www.walleyecup.com and see what
the results are in each of our seven regions,” added Barringer.
Major national sponsors for the GNWC include Skeeter Boats, Yamaha
Outboards, Lowrance Electronics, YoNet Folding Nets by AMFYOYO, Aqua-VU,
Aqua Innovations, Cabela’s and UpNorthOutdoors.com. National championship
sponsors are Towtector Shield and the VIB”E” Lure Company.
