This last weeks flw tounrny in bull shoals was a tough one. With one of our locals here (nick johnson) winning this tournament we have forgot about two other great guys (scott steil and Jarrad Fluekiger). Scott managed to get one fish on day three weighing 3.09lbs. Finishing 26th, Jaraad came in 12th cathching two fish on day three bringing in the largest bag of the day at 6.03lbs. Jarrad is now looking good again this year for angler of the year if he can keep up the good work. These two managed to catch a couple in the toughest conditions and on day three non the less, which shows there skills and dedication not to mention alot of patience
Congradulations guys on a job well done in such a tough bite

Lake erie is next, I will be watching (from my computer) But wish you both luck.

Thanks for the well wishes guys. I am still recovering from this one. A big congrats goes to Nick Johnson for a great finish in an impossible bite.

Everyone agreed this was the worst bite they have ever seen. Normally, no matter how bad the bite is, a few guys have a pattern going. That was not the case at this event. In fact, the only walleye our team caught prefishing was a 20 incher Tony caught while prefishing with me our first day there. The guys that weighed fish, and most that didn’t, pretty much got them casting cranks shallow. I stuck with this pattern the entire trip and caught one fish that was 1/2 and inch short on day two. It was a heartbreaker to say the least. I stuck with my pattern of casting Smithwicks to very shallow water on Day 3 and it finally paid off for me. At 12:30 my partner caught another 17 1/2 incher. That fish gave me the confidence to keep casting. At 1:00 I caught a nice 23 incher. This was the most important fish of my tournament career, with out a doubt.

Jarrad, had a similar story to mine. Basically he casted & trolled for 3 days but stuck to casting on day 3 and pretty much hit a double at 1:03 & 1:05 for two fish. Very exciting for both of us.

Steve Delain, another practice partner of ours also caught a fish on day 3, which not only got him some money but gave us those much needed points we were all chasing. The bite was terrible to say the least and it pretty much ruined the hopes of a lot of good anglers of making the Championship this year.

I am REALLY looking forward to Erie after this one

    Wow!!!

Scott, what turned the fish off? There were a TON of great walleye anglers in this tourney and everyone really struggled. Your thoughts???

There were a few factors working against us. First, the main lake temp was 49.7 degrees at take off and in a normal year would be 58. Second, we had bad storms a couple nights with thunder and lightning. Third, that water is crystal clear, up to 18ft of visability in summer. Fourth, the fish were actively feeding at night. Fifth, a huge shad population and recent stocking of Rainbow Trout. Sixth, boats competing for spots spooking the fish. Seventh and probably the biggest, the fish were in mid to late spawn stage in my opinion.

This was my impression of what happened to the bite. Any bite anyone had going deep, seemed to die the night before the tournament when a really bad storm system rolled through.

Tony, post that bass picture for the bass guys. Size it to 450 X 450 or send it to me and I will post it.

The crappie, Bluegill, LM Bass, Rainbow Trout, White Bass bites were all really good. We also got smallies, Stipers, Kentucky’s, Brown Trout and a few other fish I am missing I am sure.

    Scott and Jared,
Not sure if you are fishing the Erie tournament or not but I will be fishing Erie from the 22nd until the 30th. We are not fishing the tournament, just happens to be the same week we are there. We will be fishing the Bass Island area and are staying at Put-In-Bay. We have 16 guys going in 5 boats, so we cover a lot of ground. If interested PM me and maybe we could find a way to communicate. I would like to help you guys with any information we gather while out there.
