For Immediate Release
Glen Elder Next Stop for the Great Plains Division of the Gander Mountain
Grand National Walleye Cup
By Steve Weisman
Gander Mountain GNWC Publicity Director
It’s been eight weeks since the Great Plains Region of the Gander
Mountain Grand National Walleye Cup (GNWC) teams have been in action. On
Sunday, May 30, the GNWC circuit heads for Glen Elder State Park’s Waconda
Lake.
According to biologists, the bulk of the walleye fishery is made up of
18-22-inch fish with trophy potential for fish over 8 pounds. This quality
of fish should make for an interesting tournament.
Gander Mountain GNWC Executive Director talked with anticipation about
the Glenn Elder tournament. “We started off with a great bite at Coffey
County Lake. I know the teams are looking forward to this second qualifier,
and I’m sure they would love to catch the 12-pounder caught and released in
last fall’s sampling.”
The walleyes should be starting to set up into their summer peak
patterns which means anglers can expect the fish to be cruising the flats
looking for a meal, and staging on the points. The walleyes are actively
feeding this time of the year, and good bags are expected.
Openings still exist for the Glen Elder tournament and Barringer
encourages interested anglers to contact him at 1-800-890-FISH (3474), or
email the GNWC at [email protected]. The tournament director will have the
Gander Mountain GNWC trailer at the east boat ramp area of Glen Elder State
Park from 6-8 p.m. the evening before the tournament to take late entries
and answer questions.
Competing teams are to meet at the east boat ramp Sunday morning between
6-6:30 for registration and mandatory boat check.
Take-off is at 7 a.m. with the weigh-in commencing at 3 p.m. sharp. “We
hope that a lot of people will turn out for the weigh-in. The weigh-ins are
exciting and most importantly for the crowd, it’s a great opportunity to
watch and learn as the teams describe the presentations that worked best
during the tournament.”
