Would you use your boat, equipment, and knowledge to coach your local High School Walleye Team?

Sure, and it would give me another reason to tell the ol’ lady why I need to go fishing. Unfortunately my job consumes 50-60 hrs a week.

You have got my ear… I have been thinking of starting a school fishing club here in Isle. PM me with your thoughts. -Mark

Boat and equipment definitely not. Does a baseball coach buy the bats and balls?

But if there was a club that wanted to organize with the hopes of someday being a recognized sanctioned HS sport or activity, I would donate $$ and used equipment to get it started.

Sounds like an awesome idea. I wish there was such things when I was in school.

Eric, here is the response to a similar question on WC.

Here is some info from the Illinois program. I’m sure some of the coaches will chime in.

Boat yes, equipment no. I would guide a highschool walleye club in a second if I had enough time.

He didn’t say let the kids use it by themselves! He asked if one would be interested in showing high school kids how to fish using your own boat.

I think it would be a cool deal and would be game for taking some kids out.

Thanks for the clarification Wade, I don’t think that was at all clear in the beginning of the post.

Would I guide a couple kids in my boat, sure. Would I do it 5 days a week like other HS sports, NO! That’s serious wear and tear on the boat and motor and that comes right back to my initial point, coaches should not have to purchase stuff for a HS program.

I’d be first in line to donate $$ so the program could buy some decent basic style boats for the kids to use, maintain, etc. Which is part of what they should be teaching in a HS walleye club.

There’s no way any of us would donate our main boats to a walleye club that met daily for 8 weeks or more like a seasonal HS sport does.

Something like this would have been amazing back in High School. The biggest problem would be space, up keep, and theft. To get the most out of a program like this you would have to make the kids go out and get sponsorship and work for the equipment. I don’t think it would be too big of a problem to get guys together to take the kids out and teach them a few techniques and breaking down a body of water to fish. As far as getting a rig all set up, sponsorship and help from locals should be very achievable by spring. Which school were of interest?

I would guess that a high school fishing club would not be fishing on a daily basis. I would think there would be a lot of discussion type meetings, event planning etc… I can pretty much guarantee that our Walleye club would love to get involved in something like this in the LaCrosse area.

    Absolutely!

I would love to be able to give back to the younger community and offer something such as this.

If anything suffices from this, be sure to let me know and i’d be happy to assist any way I can.

Hmmm…..It would be interesting, keep me posted.

Lets hope Brian doesn’t see this he would be sneaking the kids out to fish whiskered fish corrupting them!

Although I have seen some pics of him holding some nice walleye and sauger lately! There is hope

Wouldn’t a high school fishing club be mainly during fall/winter? Either way I think it would be a great idea

    Hey Dan (original poster),

Now that there has been a lot of discussion can you please tell us why you ask?

    Thanks,
    Pete

The reason I ask is because I would like to see the SAF (Student Angler Federation) do with TWF (The Walleye Federation) that it does with TBF (The Bass Federation). There is High School Bass Fishing Nationwide through TBF and SAF however it is funded by TBF membership.TWF hasnt had time to grow and my idea is to get the kids to recruit the adults to grow membership. Kids pay $25 membership fee to SAF and adults pay $50 TWF membership. The membership includes insurance coverage for your club events and as TWF grows so does the opportunities for more youth and conservation projects. Now this is just my idea! I may be crazy, and TBF doesnt need me to reinvent their wheel, but would your grandson, neighbor, or nephew have any chance of talking you into walleye tournament fishing? Feel free to give me a call for more info. 815-509-2767 or http://www.highschoolfishing.org Thanks, Dan Palmer
