On Monday, April 11th, The Frontenac Sportsman’s Club held our monthly meeting. We reviewed all the options for this springs Lake Pepin Open. It was voted unanimously by the club members to postpone the LPO until fall of this year. I am currently working with the DNR to amend our permit. Currently we are looking at the last weekend in September or the 1st weekend in October. The swaying decision to postpones were due to the “unknowns”. Currently the water is dropping, but the City of Red Wing could not commit to us utilizing a launch, even if the water has receeded in time (clean-up). We also confired with the Goodhue County Water Patrol. They already had a rescue incident and had some concerns. Lastly, we confired with our event insurance provider and they have concerns with the possible increase in risk. Due to all the factors, the club made the determination at this point to postpone so participants have ample time to plan accordingly. I will be updating this email shortly with more news and contact each paid entrants for options for this fall event.

I will contact each team individually for refund. Because of the “potential” of not being able to hold this spring, I have not deposited any checks. THerefore I can send back or destroy depending upon each teams preference.
This was not an easy decision. Out of the 84 members present, we had 82 “yes’s” to postpone and 2 “nay’s”. That be myself and my brother DJ. But, we are a club and that was the majority’s decison.

We are in the process to amend our current permit. We are planning on holding the Lake Pepin Open October 1st and 2nd. The DNR is in the process of amending. I will contact all paid entrants for the postponed dates this weekend. You will have (2) option. First: If you want to keep your current boat number, you can, but we will hold onto your entrant fee for the fall dates. If you want you check back or destroyed, you will lose your original boat number. So, for example if you were boat 1 for the original spring dates, but want to keep boat 1, you will. If you are currently boat 2, but will not be fishing the amended LPO dates, you will lose your boat number. Boat 3 for spring decides to fish the fall LPO, they then move to boat 2. Hope this makes sense to all. Basically there is some initiative to plan on fishing the amended date.

So, I will be contacting all of the paid entrants to let you decide what you want us to do.

We appreciate all the support we are getting for postponing. It was not an easy decision, but we only had safety on our minds.

hmmm….maybe have a biggest bird side pot for the tourney. Instead of using 2 poles, one hand will be manning a shotgun.

Not to highjack the post but why is it illegal? We have been doing it for years while duck hunting on the Miss. Been checked numerous times by wardens and they never said anything. Just curious where this is documented?

    Thanks,

I think it states you can not hunt from a open boat or something like that. Most people fish from a open boat out in the river which you would not be able to hunt from at the same time.

    That my guess.

Nothing about not fishing while hunting. Just can’t troll under motorized power. I know an old boy who left a rod out with a Dare Devil on it while he jump shot a small river. Pike, walleye and ducks. Not a bad day.

A person using watercraft to take migratory waterfowl
    must comply with the
provisions for “Taking in Open Water.”
    • Migratory waterfowl may be taken from a floating watercraft if the craft is
    drifting,
beached, moored, resting at anchor, or is being propelled by paddle,
    oars, or pole.
    • Migratory waterfowl may be taken from a watercraft
    propelled by motor or
sails only if the motor is shut off and the sails are furled and the watercraft
    has
    stopped.
    • While on the water and traveling to or from a site the person intends to hunt,
unloaded and uncased firearms may be transported in a boat or other watercraft
capable of being propelled by motor or sail. Firearms must be transported
unloaded and cased in such watercraft:
    • Within Anoka, Hennepin and Ramsey counties
    • Within an area where firearms discharge has been prohibited
    • Within the boundaries if a home rule, charter or statutory city with a
    population
    of 2,500 or more.
    • As otherwise restricted by game refuge, shining or night vision laws
    • All watercraft (including boats used for duck hunting during the duck season)
are required to carry and have readily accessible, one U.S. Coast Guard
(USCG) approved wearable (Type I, II, or III) personal flotation device (PFD or
life preserver) for each person on board. In addition, boats 16 feet or longer
(except canoes and kayaks) must carry at least one USCG approved Type IV
throwable device (boat cushion or ring buoy) for the boat. Due to change in
    federal
requirements, boat cushions are no longer acceptable as primary
    life
    saving devices.
    • During open waterfowl seasons, a person may not leave an unattended
    boat
used for hunting waterfowl in public waters between sunset and one hour
before sunrise unless the boat is adjacent to private land under control of the
person and the water does not contain a natural growth of vegetation
    sufficient
to partially conceal a hunter or a boat.
    • A duck boat does not have to be licensed during the Waterfowl Hunting
    Season for waterfowl hunting only.
    • Persons leaving waters of the state must drain boating-related equipment holding
water and live wells and bilges by removing the drain plug before transporting
the watercraft and associated equipment on public roads. Drain plugs,
bailers, valves, or other devices used to control the draining of water from ballast
    tanks, bilges and live wells
