Well I got back last night from a full week down at everts. When we got there on sunday the water temp was around 33 degrees, when we left last night it was 38. That should tell you everything. The bite just got better everyday. I was targeting my fish either hand lining(1 1/2 lbs) or 3 waying with heavy weights (4’s and 5’s). The fish only wanted bright baits mostly 7’s or 5’s. We never vertical jigged but the people we watched were mostly watching small fish or no fish at all. We never caught a pig but we did have a 7-8lber get off boat side yesterday. If you are heading out this week watch out for debris floating down river. Its going to get high quick.

    First ever brown trout!

Seems there’s a couple trout caught in those areas each winter. Sure bet that was a surprise!

Looks like you guys had a great week of fishing….”again”.

    Is my jealousy showing?

    Bill

The 2 bigger ones in the second picture were released. The picture in the cleaning shack is deceiving. The one that he is holding with his left hand was a large male. The one in his right hand was about a 17 inch sauger.

You decide what get kept in your boat. Not their boat. As long as they are legal each man has his rights.

FishIm, Not sure if you fish the river much. If not then you’d be surprised to learn the males this year are so full of fat, they look like females with eggs. This pic is from Freeze Your Butt. These were all males except one. The 17″ female was one of the thinnest fish we kept that day.

I shouldn’t attack you like that Dom sorry, but it is hard to see all the fish taken out of there in the winter/spring. Everyone has the right to keep anything they want unfortunatly there are hundreds of females going under the knife. I think it is starting to take its toll on pool 4. But anyways nice fish, I was down the other day and wired up some fish also and it sure felt good. See ya out there!

I used to think the same. But after 20 plus years of fishing down there and many factual studies by various groups, it is just not the case. And I’m guilty of making the same post as you many years back…

The number one factor we are in danger to have happen – loss of habitat. Lose that and yes we risk losing everything down there.

There is almost zero percent chance pool 4 can be fished out by hook and line fishing. BTW, dnr creel surveys year in and year out indicate more pounds of fish are taken in June/July than Feb/March.

If there were a real problem here, many of us including guys like James Holst would be the first to step up and demand changes.

Looks like a great fishing trip. Lucky guy to spend a week down there. I haven’t seen any brownies out of there before, congrats on that catch.

Nice post Dom. Was good to get a chance to fish with you this week. We need to do it again when the flood is done.

Nice job on the walleyes & saugers Dom and Ben!

It was great to shoot the breeze with the two of you.

Young or old, I always enjoy talking fishing with guys that know what there talking about. Being this was my 2nd trip to Pool 4, I appreciate all the pointers you shared with me.

Nice fish. I was out there today and found 41-42 temps in some areas. 4 fish in 10 casts pitching with 3/16 orange head and chartreuse/pepper moxi. I had to break off in a snag. Went to tie another jig and come to find that my box of jigs was not in the boat Went to pitching hair jigs and blades and nothing happened on those.

Thanks for the update.Looks like you had a pretty good week of fishing. Water temps & flow are coming up. Time to break out the cranks & dial them in.

Great fish and great job releasing the females! I couldn’t care less about what the law says we can do — I believe it’s very important to release the big ones.

Looks like a great trip! There is and always will be a debate between legal and ethical. Either way, great fish!
